A simple task when looked at on a different level gives us an idea of how the body and mind works to produce an action and a result. For instance, there are perceptive processes within the vital steps during a jump shot. Shooting a basketball whilst may seem like a trivial task, requires hand-eye co-ordination as well as visual, depth and touch perception. This essay will focus specifically on one fluid motion; the moment the player bends his knees through to when the ball is released from his fingertips.
Perception is how the brain takes in information before it is processed to produce an action. When shooting a basketball, visual perception, touch perception and depth perception all play their part to produce the result: a jump shot.
Visual perception is what aids a human analyze their surrounds, recognize what is around them and is crucial to help the brain make decisions based on what they see. When a basketball player faces the hoop before he shoots the jump shot, he must first identify where the backboard is. Visual perception all starts with visible light. A band of energy within the electromagnetic spectrum is created by electric charges and is radiated as waves, known as Wavelengths. “The energy in this spectrum can be described by its wavelength—the distance between the peaks of the electromagnetic waves“(Goldstein, 2013).
The electromagnetic waves range from extremely short gamma rays, to long radio waves. Within that continuum is visible light which is the only light humans are able to perceive. As humans, we associate colour with the different wavelengths – blue being on the shorter side of the spectrum and yellow and red being on the longer side, while green sits in the middle. For humans to see anything, visible li...

...n game. When training a novice, coaches will put more time and effort into focusing on a players fundamental and form before focusing on game plans and more advanced drills and plays. A novice learning the fundamentals of shooting will take a longer amount of time getting form right and learning to adjust their shot and calculating their shot in an instance because their muscle memory hasn’t stored the action. A professional player can adjust and calculate their shot in an instance without any though due to long term memory, each movement is a swift motion, and because their bodies know exactly how to perform an action, it gives their brains time to make proper decisions in game, like how to get around a defender, or how to score a basket. A novice has to concentrate on their fundamentals before they can think about harder and higher level decisions within a game.
The three primary colors - as far as light is concerned - are red, green, and blue. In order to "see" images, the human eye enables light to stimulate the retina (a neuro-membrane lining the inside of the back of the eye). The retina is made up of what are called rods and cones. The rods, located in the peripheral retina, give u...
In basketball, the goal is to win the game. To do that your team needs to make more baskets than the opponent. So, I am going to teach you how to shoot correctly just in case you ever find yourself playing in a game. You need to have the correct form, proper stance, jump, and follow through.
The electromagnetic spectrum is a range of different types of radiations, this is energy that travels and spreads out as it goes. This range involves more than just visible light- small portion of the spectrum detected by the human eye- it goes beyond what the human eye cannot see. The two most important characteristics of the spectrum are wavelength and frequency. The electromagnetic spectrum can be divided into three different parts: the theory of visible light, the range of the electromagnetic spectrum, and how it benefits mankind.
The Webster dictionary determines perception to be knowledge by the senses and/or life that have an influence on people’s perception (Parker, 2010). The way people perceive things is based on their five senses. The sense of sight was the main sense used in the following experiment, as well as a person’s memory. Eyes tell people what they want to see and want to know. They tell you how to conceive a person and their behaviors as well as their reactions. It essentially judges the world around you. One is able to perceive how a person reacts to certain situations entirely by watching them. Perception applies to the interpretation of what we take in through our senses, in terms of optical illusions. Optical illusions happen because our brains are trying to define what it is that we envision and make sense of the world around us. If perception has no foundation in a person’s experience, a person may literally not perceive it. Perception is a method by which people set up and define their sensory impressions to give significance to their environment. Critical thinking is something we all do, because the regularity may range from person to person.
Shooting is probably the most fun part of basketball. The most renowned basketball players in history are efficient and consistent shot makers, whether inside the paint or out of it. Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and LeBron James…all of them can shoot the lights out of the stadiums they play in.
Many video games supply people with a way to entertain themselves. One game for example is National Basketball Association 2k17 (NBA 2k17). Although it is a popular game, many are uninformed of its many advantages. Some find that NBA 2k17 is just another way to earn money and persuade consumers into buying their product. However, playing the game of NBA can help improve one’s skill and knowledge about the game of basketball.
...e you a great shooter. Although I suffered injuries in my past basketball career which earned me a basketball scholarship to play collegiate basketball, I am now more knowledgeable about my position. This knowledge has helped me reflect on myself and my experiences as a player transitioning to a coach. I believe it is important that I educate my players and teach them proper mechanics but also mental set. Acknowledge that the jump shot is more than a motion of physical ability and talent, it takes a great amount of thinking and implying the information you already know to what you learned. All coaches throughout the country regardless of their level should have knowledge of biomechanics and require there staff to also know the following information. This allows the opportunity for kids to learn the correct technique, prevent injuries, and transform them as a player.
In the perception process we would first look at our environment and select the data from there, to do that we need to use our five senses, which are. Our sight ( using our eyes ), our smell ( using our nose ), our hearing ( using our ears), our feeling (using mostly skin), and our taste ( using our tongue). We use our senses as a window which we use to pass information from our environment into ourselves. In the select...
There are many aspects to the game of basketball and physics can be applied to all of them. Although to be good at basketball it is not necessary to play it from a physics point of view. Basketball players become good by developing muscle memory for the actions that must be performed in the game of basketball from years of practice. Nevertheless knowing some of the physics in the game of basketball can help a good player be a better player. In this paper I will cover the three most important aspects of the game, shooting, dribbling and passing.
What are the effects of practicing for basketball and not practicing? There is plenty of effects of practicing and not practicing. The different things that can happen between practicing for basketball and practicing the things that can be effected is that the ability to play games, it can effect the skill level of the player, and learning how to play and cooperate with teammates. This is going to explain what are the good and bad effects of practicing or not practicing basketball.
Each one of us lives in our own unique world of perception. As individuals, we may experience life in an entirely different way through our senses and life experiences. Therefore, perception can be tricky since it is very personal to each one of us. According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, perception has three meanings; (1) “the way you think about or understand someone or something,” (2) “the ability to understand or notice something easily,” and, (3) “the way that you notice or understand something using one of your senses” (2014, para. 1). C.S. Lewis said, “What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are standing. It also depends on what sort of person you are” (n.d., para. 11). In other words,
Sports are often identified to have positive influences on many individuals. The sports industry is growing worldwide, especially the basketball industry, which is regarded in second place behind football. The global prevalence of basketball is unquestionable, especially among the young. Basketball is a dynamic team sport that involves a pattern of alternating, active, and skilled movement activities. There are compound demands that require a mixture of individual skills, team plays, strategies, and motivational aspects.
Physics is a part of everyday life. It is evident in the modern technological devices we use in every day experiences and objects around us. Although physics is understood to be only useful in the classroom, physics can also be applied to one the most popular activities on the planet, basketball. Whether jumping for the ball, or leaping for a slam dunk, the human body follows the same laws of projectile motion as do other objects. The sport that includes shooting, passing, running, and dribbling involves topics covered in physics such as force, friction, effects of air resistance, velocity, air pressure and energy. Basketball also involves factors such as projectile motion in making a basket, gravity and its effects on passing and dribbling, and Newton’s First and Third Law on passing and a number of others.
Visual perception and visual sensation are both interactive processes, although there is a significant difference between the two processes. Sensation is defined as the stimulation of sense organs Visual sensation is a physiological process which means that it is the same for everyone. We absorb energy such as electro magnetic energy (light) or sound waves by sensory organs such as eyes. This energy is then transduced into electro chemical energy by the cones and rods (receptor cells) in the retina. There are four main stages of sensation. Sensation involves detection of stimuli incoming from the surrounding world, registering of the stimulus by the receptor cells, transduction or changing of the stimulus energy to an electric nerve impulse, and then finally the transmission of that electrical impulse into the brain. Our brain then perceives what the information is. Hence perception is defined as the selection, organisation and interpretation of that sensory input.
Light is what lets you experience colour. The pigment of the retina in your eyes is sensitive to different lengths of light waves which allows you to see different colours. The wavelengths of light that humans can see are called the visible colour spectrum.
