Culture has been influenced over the years. Being by music, food, and media. Obviously, culture is passed down by a chain, but over the years the culture has commutated, in the way that people around have influenced it. For example, the clothing that certain tv shows have has changed over the decades. Media has had a great deal with how pop culture has been influenced over time.
My understanding of pop culture has quite to do with media. Specifically the American family. If reflected to the tv shows back in the 50’s, the programs showed what the ideal family was like. For example, Leave it to Beaver, Ward Cleaver, who was the father; had to leave for a business trip. He asked his older son, Wally, to take care of June; the mother, and the youngest
Canfield, Wally takes his father’s role and goes to the school himself. In the show, the family never seems to have problems that all families today have. They were the “ideal family”. In Wonder Years, Jack; the father, also was the responsible of the household, while Norma, the mother, was a stay at home mom and watched over her kids; Karen, Wayne, and Kevin Arnold. The difference in this show was, Jack did present having problems and being distant from his family. In one of the scenes, Kevin tried asking Jack what he did for a living, and Jack got frustrated. Norma then stepped up and told Jack that Kevin just wanted to get to know him. Now this is important because, as a stay at home mom, Norma really switched roles when telling Jack that and putting him in his place. In another scene, it is seen that Norma is altering a skirt for Karen, after she takes a look at it, she asks Norma to make it shorter and Norma makes a distinct comment about it. Although this show is set in late 60’s early 70’s, you can notice the difference of wardrobe change and attitude in just a matter of 10 years or more. In Roseanne, switched up the roles with both parents Roseanne and Dan Conner working and
Before there were not many answers about religion, but media has been able to get an idea/understanding of religion, and even found it okay to question. For example, in the film Taqwacore, there are muslims who are punk. Yusef moves to New York to go to school, and while looking for somewhere to live he runs across this muslim punk house. All the muslims their belive they are muslims, but to the world outside them, they will never be accepted as a true muslim. Everyone in that house has questioned the muslim beliefs and the Quran, Yusef has yet not but more in the movie, he calls his parents less, is okay with having muslim girls around, and okay with living in a house where muslims drink, smoke, and engage in sex. At the end of the scene Jehangir is killed, then Yusef throws his jacket away and flicks it off as in following the rebellious way of the
