Media’s ability to use advertising to sell sex, images of ideal body figures, and gender expectations have been proven to be problematic in today’s society. Body shaming, eating disorders, and extreme makeovers are some of the results advertising is responsible for, nut fail to comment upon. Furthermore, gender differences and role expectations are advertise in mass media outlets such as television, movies, and sport venues where women are often objectified as sex objects, submissive damsels in distress, and subjective to ideal body images which are not reflective of today’s social reality. Body shaming is defined as inappropriate negative statements and attitudes towards another person’s weight or size. Media’s negative images and comments towards individuals who are overweight have gotten the attention of famous celebrities. Celebrities such as Vin Diesel and Jennifer Lawrence have publicly challenged media’s negative comments about their size and weight. Moreover, actress Jennifer Lawrence has been called fat many times over and she 's also been told that she does not have the ideal body figure media is use to seeing in television, but what makes matters less hostile is her responses to some of these insults.
