Naturalism is a literary school that came into existence around the end of the nineteenth century. The main goal of naturalism is to correct the sometimes inaccurate use of situational ethics as well as the emphasis on commonplace or typical events found in realism. Katherine Anne Porter’s “The Jilting of Granny Weatherall” is an example of naturalism with its use of truth that is governed by natural laws, simple narrative structure, and Granny’s epiphany that death has finally caught up to her in the end. This story is set-up with a simple narrative structure. The entire story is told from Granny Weatherall’s perspective of what is happening to her while lying in bed and the memories of her life. Granny’s narration tells us the story of her life, and the hardships she has faced from losing a husband at an early age, having to raise the children, care for the house, finances, neighbors, and sick “negros” by herself, as well as being stood-up at the alter by George.
