Without women, the eradication and extinction of our entire race would be inevitable. Women carry our children for nine painful excruciating months to ensure the survival of the human race. Yes, women have been helping the world since the beginning of time; but are we really repaying them for all they do? Women make up an overwhelming 46 percent of today’s workforce, but are they treated identically to their male cohorts (English)? Unfortunately, even though women do so much for our species and the world as a whole, they are still not treated the same or seen as being on the same level as their masculine counterparts because they are identified as a threat. It is a sad fact indeed that we will forever be in the debt of women, but we aren’t doing anything to fulfill that debt.
The inequality difference between females and males is most evidently present in today’s workforce. By calculating the earnings of men and women who are directly associated with the workforce, it was shown that women only make 69.6 cents of each male dollar earned (English). This in turn causes a higher range of women to make a yearly salary less than $15,000, but only 1.3 percent of men manage to flop into this category (English). To make the difference between females and males even more stark, the average yearly salary of all working Americans was shown to be anywhere from $25,000 to $49,999. This range is seen as the very top for women; only 9.6 percent of women garner more than $50,000 a year. In contrast 44.5 percent of men work to collect more than $50,000 a year (English). Yet, after accomplishing such a feat, we somehow find another group to treat terribly. The fact that women are mistreated is ridiculous and disgraceful. Women are in control of our entire existence. If all women decided to band together and stop having children, it would surely be the end of the human race. By the way women are treated, it’s surprising at the least that this has not yet come to be. How can we treat the very beings that keep us alive and well the way we do? Things have to change in the near future if we expect to grow, thrive, and survive. It’s about time we stood up for the female gender. Challenge the world. Go out and petition for women’s rights. Show everyone that we actually care about the sole providers of the human race.
Ever since the beginning of time a man and a woman have always been there to bring the beginning of civilization. Society has evolutionized from what it was back in the beginning, but there are some things that have still remained the same. The way women are viewed in society has been looked down upon and are also considered to be there to care and raise for the children. They have been mistreated because of their gender, not being treated equally, or be given an image of trying to be something they’re not just to be accepted.
In addition, women are paid less than men for the same type of work. According to Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg mentions that women were paid fifty-nine cents for every dollar men were paid in 1996, but women protested to raise the compensation to seventy-seven cents (6). This means that even though a woman and a man perform the same work such as an engineer does, both do the same assignments and have the same responsibilities in the technology place, men are paid twenty three cents more than women. When President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act of 1963 into law, he hoped that it would allow working women to finally earn the same amount of money as men; however, more than half a century later, men continue to out earn women in almost every field of work (Lipman para. 4). Male dominated fields tend to pay more than female dominated fields at similar skill levels. In 2012, women earned an average of $691 per week while men earned an average of $854 per week. Furthermore, the majority of women remain unaware that they are earning less than their male colleagues (Hegewisch para. 1).
There are nearly as many women as there are men working, yet, as it was discovered in 2011, on average, a woman will only earn seventy-seven cents for every dollar that a man earns. Women owned businesses make up for over a quarter of all national businesses and earn more than one point two trillion dollars (“Assessing the Past, Taking Stock of the Future” 6). Since many women are now becoming are the primary sources of income in the household, making less that a man does not only negatively affect families, but also the overall economy suffers as well. These women, among many others, are the ones who end up purchasing the supplies that go toward improving communities and stimulating the economy. There is no reason that the general public should stand for this. Women should be treated equally to men in today’s American society based on their biological compositions, psychological profiles and contributions to history.
In conclusion, even though our society would like to believe that women have always had equal liberties (with men) in everything they do, we can see this is not the case. Throughout human history, woman has believed she is inferior to man, however, now with our civilization progressing in the women’s right movement everyday, women can finally come to terms with the fact that they are indeed equal to men.
Even with the great strides being made toward gender equality, women have a long way to go before true equality is reached. Stereotypes and misconceptions regarding the abilities and roles of women must continue to positively evolve for our society to improve both in the workforce and at home.
It is very important to be concerned about the issue because it is constantly increasing throughout the United States. It upsets me that women are paid less than men because women have the same ability and work ethic as men do, but they are looked at differently. According to AAUW, women make 77 percent of what men make. This rate hasn’t changed since 2002 (Hill, 2013). Statistics show that women will never make as much as men due to the thought of never being comparable to men (Williams, 2013).
From the beginning of time, females have played a powerful role in the shaping of this world. They have stood by idly and watched as this country moved on without them, and yet they have demanded equal rights as the nation rolls along. Through the years the common belief has been that women could not perform as well as men in anything, but over the years that belief has been proven wrong time and time again. So as time marches on, women have clawed and fought their way up the ladder to gain much needed equal respect from the opposite sex. However, after many years of pain and suffering, the battle for equal rights has not yet been won. Since women have fought for a long time and proven their importance in society, they deserve the same rights as men.
Throughout history, women have remained subordinate to men. Subjected to the patriarchal system that favored male perspectives, women struggled against having considerably less freedom, rights, and having the burdens society placed on them that had been so ingrained the culture. This is the standpoint the feminists took, and for almost 160 years they have been challenging the “unjust distribution of power in all human relations” starting with the struggle for equality between men and women, and linking that to “struggles for social, racial, political, environmental, and economic justice”(Besel 530 and 531). Feminism, as a complex movement with many different branches, has and will continue to be incredibly influential in changing lives.
Today in the United States, men make more than women in various sectors, including education and other trades favoring women workers. The gap gets bigger when comparing the wages earned by men to those of women in jobs favoring men workers such as construction or other physically demanding jobs. Women are less likely to work those jobs, therefor; men have the advantage of having more experience and get paid better. In addition, employers would rather hire a man instead of a woman because they believe that a man will be able to sustain the difficulty of the job and work longer hours which crate a disadvantage for women because they are unable to gain experience and become skilled in that certain field. Although we have made great strides in the movement toward equality, our society still holds a stigma about women. The idea that women are weak and feeble is still alive and thriving. The fight has not yet been won, and it will continue to be an issue until the stigma is dismantled and destroyed.
Since the beginning of time, women have always been seen as things purely for the pleasure and benefit of men. Women have always been objectified. Objectification is seeing and treating a person as if they did not have thoughts and feelings, as if they had the status of an object.{1} Only in recent years have they begun to be seen as individuals of equal intelligence and ability. You may think, ”Women have had equal rights for a while. I do not see how this is a problem.” It may not seem like women were given their rights recently, but in our history, women have been treated objectively for thousands of years, even dating back to biblical times. Still, even when women have the same rights, opportunities, and responsibility as men, women can be found almost everywhere being treated as though they were incompetent and lesser human beings.{4}
Historically, males and females normally assume different kinds of jobs with varying wages in the workplace. These apparent disparities are widely recognized and experienced across the globe, and the most general justification for these differences is that they are the direct outcomes of discrimination or traditional gender beliefs—that women are the caregivers and men are the earners. However, at the turn of the new century women have revolutionized their roles in the labor market. Specifically in industrialized societies, the social and economic position of women has shifted. Despite of the improving participation of women in the labor force and their ameliorating proficiency and qualifications, the labor force is still not so favorable to women. The opportunities available for women in the market are not as diverse as those presented to men. Still, the construct of gender ideology influences how employers undertake economic decisions, and that is why companies still have jobs labelled as “men’s work” and occupations categorized as “women’s work.” Indeed, the pervasiveness of gender differences in labor markets is undeniably true, specifically with respect to salary gap between men and women, occupational gender segregation of men and women, and the challenge that women face in terms of juggling their time and attention between their career and family life.
As life continue to grow with outstanding achievements, there are also dark sides in this society. The more this community get developed, the more complicated it would be. Each year passed by, we have to face with many issues. Some of them are small, but some are not. Some problems caused the whole world to think and still not yet fixed. And violence against women is among them. Many women have to suffer from pain, both in physical and mental, without knowing how to stop or getting help from the others. No matter how many times women beg for help, society turns a blind eye to them, families put pressure on them, and people around trampled on them, make them realized that they don’t have a voice in this world. But after all, they’re still living and fighting for themselves until now. Their perseverance is admirable though they were treated badly. Without women, can the world be advanced like this? And why must these unfortunate people suffer severe consequences and unjust though they have devoted a lot for humanity?
