The industry of sport and business management is one that is growing extremely rapidly. One of the most popular career paths within this industry is that of a head athletic director, especially those at division I universities. Plenty of undergraduates, and recent graduates just entering the work force do not often have a clear view on the path that they should take en route to their dream job of becoming a head AD. Gone are the days where the head coach would retire from the football field to become the head AD of his alma mater (Hardin et. al 2013). Entry-level jobs in collegiate athletics work as a transition from school to work (Lynch 1993). With the rapid expansion of collegiate athletics, there are many different areas in which one can gain entry-level work based upon their future career aspirations (Fitzgerald et. al 1994). For a sales orientated AD, working for a major university’s ticket sales team would be the first step. While, someone more absorbed with fundraising may find work within a school’s alumni or donor organization. There are also many opportunities within marketing, promotion, event management, and communication for entry-level employment (Fitzgerald et. al 1994). Entry-level jobs are similar to internships in that they both are used to educate and develop students and employees for the next step in their career. However, entry-level jobs often come with longer hours, as well as more responsibility than internships provide (Lynch 1994). If I had the opportunity to create a new college sport system, it would not look anything like the current system American colleges use today. Education and Athletics, two of the most prized activities within our society. So is it any surprise that the two are so closely linked in one of our societies favorite pastimes College Sports? Some believe that these two things benefit each other and some don’t. In this Rhetorical Analysis I will be analyzing the argument presented by the article titled Rethinking the Benefits of College Athletics, which questions the academic benefit that college athletics provide. The article which appeared in Forbes magazine is written by Johnathan Robe a research fellow at the Center for College Affordability and Productivity. The author describes his thesis in the first sentence of the article stating “In my short life, I’ve long been perplexed with the way many higher ed administrators–particularly college presidents–tend to laud college sports for the benefits they accrue to institutions of higher learning.“ (Robe 1) arguing that college athletics are not beneficial to colleges and in some ways can even be harmful. Robe's argument does provide supporting evidence, however it is unlikely to convince those readers that come into it with an opposing view.

Therefore, it is very difficult to get a job coaching a team. It is even more difficult to be awarded a sports administration position, such as an athletic director when you are African American. Over the years, the percentage of black coaches has slowly risen. That being said, black coaches are seen more in sports such as men’s and women’s basketball and track and field, baseball, and football. There are few to none black coaches in sports like men’s and women’s lacrosse and field and ice hockey. The biggest growth for black coaches over time is seen in women’s basketball. When it comes down to it, there are more assistant coaches than there are head coaches. Many ask, why is this so? How is this fair? Through research it was found, that “In 1996 African Americans were 7.5 percent of all athletic directors. A decade later in 2006 this increased to only 7.9 percent”(Snail-like 41). The impact of college athletic programs on academics has always been a controversial and contentious topic. It seems that athletic programs have some contemplative effects on academics of colleges and universities. Different people have different ideas about how college athletic programs should be carried on. College presidents, administrations, student athletes, parents of students, and athletic trainers are along with these people who point out different facts about the fallouts of athletics on academics. A bunch of people suggest that athletic programs should be dropped from college system, while another group suggests that athletic programs should be taken care with more advertence. College athletics play a valuable role and are beneficial to institutions in ways such as promoting positive character development among athletes, establishing unity from a surplus of people, and supporting college experiences and traditions. The NCAA is a global, and well-known company that regulates collegiate sports with thousands of universities across the country. The NCAA organizational assessment shows its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats relative to all competitors.
