What came first the chicken or the egg, and did the name for the orange come first or the name for the color? Perhaps the person who got to name everything just got lazy. How much wood could a Woodchuck chuck if a Woodchuck could chuck wood? How much juice could Orange Juice juice if Orange Juice could juice juice? Oranges are tangy cannonballs of goodness and that is sometimes all we see them as, when in reality they have an enormous explosion of health benefits that are often not recognized.

Everyone has heard the saying an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but have they ever heard the saying an orange, yes way, will help you live another day? Oranges, along with many other citrus fruit have D-limonene in them (Hezy). D-limonene has proven to help prevent skin cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, mouth cancer, and colon cancer (Sun). This is most likely why the breakfast cereal companies will add in a glass of orange juice and say, “part of this complete breakfast”. “Because of its gastric acid neutralizing effect and its support of normal peristalsis, it has also been used for relief of heartburn as well” (Sun). D-limonene is also used clinically for dissolving cholesterol-containing gallstones (Sun).

Every good long-distance runner knows that the more red blood cells someone has, the more oxygen that can be transported to their muscles. “Oranges are rich with iron and Vitamin B6, essential in the production of red blood cells (Perfect Shape).” Other things like fiber, folate, and herperidin, also found in oranges, directly promote the proper functioning of the cardiovascular system (Hezy).
