Don’t we snatch the rainbow from their sky? Don’t we force them to close the window of their life? Yes, we do! We get our children married in the morning of their life and force them to close their outlook. “Child marriages were common throughout human history. Today, child marriages are still fairly widespread in some developing areas of the world, such as parts of Africa, South Asia, Southeast and East Asia, West Asia, Latin America, and Oceania. The incidence rates of child marriage have been falling in most parts of the world. The five nations with the highest observed rates of child marriages in the world, below the age of 18, are Niger, Chad, Mali, Bangladesh and Guinea. The top three nations with greater than 20% rates of child marriages below the age of 15 are Niger, Bangladesh and Guinea” (Unknown, “Child marriage”). Besides“we have noticed the absence of effective methods of ensuring registration of birth, in south Asian countries”. (Goonesekere, “CHILDREN, LAW AND JUSTICE”).Child marriages are driven by dowry, fearful social conditions, migration and religion.
Dowry is a blistering reason behind Child marriage. “Dowry is the parental property that is distributed to a daughter at her marriage, instead of after parent's death. It has been an ancient practice, but often an economic challenge for the bride's family. The difficulty to save and preserve wealth for dowry was common, particularly in times of economic hardship, or persecution, or unpredictable seizure of property and savings for discriminatory taxes such as Jizya. These difficulties pressed families to betroth their girl, irrespective of her age, as soon as they had the resources to pay the dowry.
