A typical day in a businessman’s life involves waking up early, grabbing a coffee, racing to the office, and working long stressful hours. Even once he makes it home that night his work usually comes with him via blackberry. Family time is most likely limited to the weekends. Even then, he might still be busy on his phone or checking his emails. Taking a break from such a life by sitting on the beach or touring the world or even sitting at home can have a major effect on your life. People don’t realize how stressful and damaging life can be without vacations. Taking annual vacations are vital to living a healthy and productive life.
Life without vacations is a life that many people live with numerous excuses to support their lifestyle choice. A study done in Canada shows that in the year 2007, twenty-one percent of Canadians didn’t take their vacation days that were allotted to them. Another argument—if his ego is really big—would be that his company can’t run without him. A third reason, one that most people wouldn’t admit, is that they are more comfortable at work than at home with their family (Anonymous, 2006). The list of excuses is endless and its result is, many people are not taking vacations and living stressful lives.

“In the last twenty years the amount of time Americans have spent at their jobs has risen steadily. Each year the change is small, amounting to about nine hours, or slightly more than one additional day of work (Schor, 1). Juliet B. Schor’s The Overworked American: The Unexpected Decline of Leisure explores the decline of leisure time in American professionals and laborers as a result of an increase in working time. In comparison to our European counterparts, American workers are now working close to 320 more hours yearly. Schor highlights the fact that American workers are choosing to work multiple jobs contributing to less leisure time due to longer working hours. In conclusion the book depicts the idea that the materialistic nature of Americans results in them choosing to work more so that they can spend more.

Over the last several years, the United States has experienced the emergence of countless lifestyle based illnesses. We have seen an increase of inactivity, poor nutrition, an increase of tobacco use, and more frequent alcohol consumption; Americans are living unhealthy lifestyles that are surely factors contributing to the pervasiveness of chronic diseases. According to a case study by Daniel Wesley, “Twenty-five percent [of families] said they will spend more than $1,000 on their vacation,” this may not seem to be cause for attention, however, frequent vacationing and frivolous spending leads to less household funds. It is no secret that if families are saving money for vacation funds, then they aren’t likely to spend as habitually. “The growth rate of the real GDP has been higher on average when the personal saving rate is rising than when it is failing,” (Skousen,
Vacations aren't always perfect there is always something that goes wrong. At least in my experiences. A perfect vacation to me is when we are all together as a family, which honestly doesn't happen that much. Having a 20 year old brother an 18 year old in post secondary school can make things complicated. Or having a vacation with no,ILLNESS, which can be very, very hard to do!! And I know I’m not the only one who has experienced this on a vacation!

Starting and expanding families is challenging for most working people in America. Job uncertainty, financial insecurity and catering to the needs of a newborn are just a few of many challenges American families face when taking a leave of absence from work after the birth of a child. Every company should have a family policy that gives its employees the option to take paid leave if a family emergency occurs—most importantly the arrival of a newborn. Paid family leave will give working parents in America the chance to adjust to the lifestyle changes associated with having a newborn, without putting the stability of their home at risk. Family obligations are also a large contributor to people not being on the job. A large majority of the working population have kids. Also, these kids need care when parents are at work, and sometimes the people that are responsible for taking care of the children when they are at work cannot be available when always needed. People always need to leave work early to pick kids up, drop them off, or take care of them when someone else is not around
We enjoyed the vacation because we knew there was no debt baggage to come back with us. We practice saving to spend. In other words, if we do not have the funds, we will not spend. People might view the budgeting process as restrictive; however, it is liberating.
