The definition of marriage varies depending on who you ask. Some people say it is a union between a man and woman, and others would argue that marriage is a union between two partners. The topic of same-sex marriage has been a growing debate in the last century. Seventeen states currently have a law that allows same-sex marriages, eight which have been passed since 2011 (ProCon.org). This suggests that there is an increase in the belief that same-sex couples should be able to marry, and I agree. I believe that America is changing and it is time for the country as a whole to accept same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage can provide benefits to our country, and there are several advantages to marriage that same-sex couples are being deprived of.
One reason I believe that same-sex couples should be allow to marry is for financial opportunities. Married couples are entitled to several benefits financially, and couples that are banned from getting married are denied these benefits. This includes small benefits such as raising a credit score, to larger benefits such as sharing employer health benefits. Marriage allows a couple to obtain joint health, home, and auto insurance. Also when a spouse dies there is no need to prove ownership of their items. Having these financial rewards are essential at creating financial stability, which is especially necessary for couples who have children. All couples should be eligible for these financial opportunities.
Along with benefiting the gay and lesbian, same-sex couples can also benefit America by providing stable homes for adopted children. According to the Administration for Children and Families, there are 400,00 children in the United States that are living in foster care. “We should be be...

... right to vote. While gays and lesbians are allowed to vote, they are being denied a right similar to voting. The opinion on same-sex marriage is changing, and it is time that everyone accepts it because one day it will be normal in our society.
Imagine living in a world with no discrimination, or prejudice. While this is unrealistic, giving same-sex couples the right to marry is a step in the right direction. Times are changing and so is our country and it is time that every American learns to accept this. It is time to stop discriminating against others and give everyone the right to marry. This would create a better, more united country. In 100 years people will look back on this issue and realize that it was cruel to ever deny same-sex couples of their rights. The sooner this debate is over, the sooner we can have a better country with more love and less hate.
As an American citizen, a person should be entitled to marry whoever they choose, regardless of gender or sexual preference. Gay marriage is something that some people consider to be taboo while other people are very supportive of it; I am one of the latter. The ability to marry someone is a basic human right and it should not be taken away from someone because they love a person of the same gender. One of the main reasons that gay marriage is illegal in the United States is because of what the Bible says about it, regardless of the fact that the first Amendment of the US Constitution says that there is to be a separation between church and state. Approximately three point eight percent of the United States population is made up of people
Within America’s society today, 3.8 percent of the population is gay, lesbian, or bisexual. With only 17 of the 50 states legalizing and recognizing this type of relationship (“History…”), it puts a stronghold on same-sex couples to publicly declare their love with the promise of marriage. Same-sex marriages should be legalized because everyone has equal rights of freedom and liberty.
When you think of America, you think of a land of freedom. A beautiful place where all is harmonious, equal, and peaceful. You visualize a world in which love is inevitable; a place of comfort where everyone has the right to marry their beloved ones. This in fact, is not the case with same-sex marriage. Same-sex marriage has been scrutinized throughout the nation, especially in America, for decades. I strongly support the idea that individuals of the same-sex should have the freedom and equality throughout their marriage just like anyone else.
With all that aside, same-sex marriage should be legalized in all 50 states. Furthermore, it should be legal across the world. Gender should not play a role in marriage because gender is irrelevant when it comes to being in love. If it was legalized, same-sex couples would be able to publicly display their commitment to each other, have the same benefits as heterosexual couples, stop being referred to as inferior, create more revenue for the government, and it will also help the gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual people’s physical and mental health. “If anybody can find someone to love them and to help them through this difficult thing called life, I support that in any shape or form,” (Will Smith).
Same-sex marriage is an issue of equal rights. All human beings should be treated equally and allowed the same options. So allowing gay couples to wed would promote equality for everyone and break this barrier we have between heterosexuals and homosexuals. Straight couples marry for love and to start a family, but they also do it to gain access to all the benefits and legal protections that come with it. Adoption, hospital visitations, child support, and family insurance are just a few examples of obligations and protections that are denied to same-sex couples. Cleary, homosexuals won’t get the same options heterosexuals do it they aren’t allowed to get married, thus ensuring that they are not treated equally, making this an equal rights issue.
There’s multiple ways the idea of having same sex marriage legalized should be considering the fact on the thousands of people can obtain benefits for themselves that they never had before. For example, in the article “ Social Security agency shows why Supreme Court must act on gay marriage,” it claims that “Social Security has published new instructions that allow the agency to process more claims in which entitlement or eligibility is affected by a same-sex relationship,” the federal retiree agency said. Unfortunately, “the Social Security Act requires the agency to follow state law in Social Security cases.” Although there’s a flow the Social security is doing all they can to give these people the same right as everyone else despite the implications that are in
What is the true definition of marriage? Is it about “religious freedoms or obeying the law”, The Merriam Webster dictionary the full definition is “the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law. Also the states of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage” (Merriam Webster). Gay marriage has always been a controversial topic and I wanted to look more into the many reasons people get worked about it. Starting in 2010 the elections had a general opposition to legalize same-sex marriage but then results from polls split, some support while others are in opposition. The years did not change much from
Legal marriage is the right of all Americans regardless of their sexual orientation. Gay marriage is certainly a hot button issue. It invokes an emotional dialogue filled with passion, rage, hate and fear. However, at the base of it all, are two people who are in a committed relationship living normal and productive lives and contributing to society in a positive manner. This issue is being debated in every state of the union, and will eventually go to the Supreme Court.
...d be granted the same legal benefits and rights that we often take for granted. When did love become illegal? Why is it okay to delve into the dangers of life, but not okay to be gay? It’s these questions that need to be addressed and reflected on by society. It’s the smallest steps that man has taken that have made the largest impacts for mankind, and the same is true in this case. Progress is progress, and regardless of who lies at the other end of that wedding aisle, we should recognize one thing that love comes in various aspects. If there is anything that we should take from this, it’s that now is the time for us to move forward and recognize that people are all people, with the same bones, the same bodies, and the same ability to love. Now is the time to leave judgment behind for the greater appreciation of a human soul. Now is the time to make love legal.
The idea that marriage can only be between a man and a woman is an antiquated belief. While understanding and sympathizing with the concern that same-sex marriage will change the traditional definition of marriage, people must come to realize that same-sex unions have no effect on heterosexual relationships. People can argue rights or family life or religion, constituting a strong argument, but ultimately, no argument is as strong as that of equality. Marriage is a celebration of life and love that should be available to both heterosexual and same sex couples.
Imagine yourself in a position where all the options you have are limited, just because of what you believe in. You were born into a world where the rules of society are already placed for you, and labeled you "unnatural", because you are different. Now right now it may seem like I am talking about any other country where not everyone is equal, but sadly I am speaking about my own country that I was born and raised in, the United States of America. Difference has been a constant problem since the birth of this country, from women being able to vote, to people of different color being able to wed together. Today my main focus will be about same sex marriage, who is someone to get in the way of two people who love each other unconditionally, to see be able to spend the rest of their days together, and plan for each others future. The thought of same sex marriage is something that should not be rejected, but instead embraced in order for this country to become a better place for the next generation to come.
Gay marriage is defined as a legal union between members of the same sex. Ten percent of Americans, because of their sexual orientation are denied the right to marry. As a country we need to move away from illogical reasoning, whether it be based on ignorance or prejudice. We need to allow every individual the civil right to wed his or her life partner.
The way society views same sex marriage can change. Throughout history, many beliefs have changed. In the past, black people were not considered as citizens in the constitution. It is not until the thirteenth amendment in 1865 that slavery was banned. Women were not considered equal to men and were not given the right to vote until 1920 when congress passed the fourteenth amendment. It takes time but opinions and beliefs can change and the past has shown us that is indeed possible! Same sex marriage are nothing more than the union of two humans being that care, love, and want to make commitments to each other. That commitment can not be recognized unless same sex marriage is legalized.
In conclusion I argue that banning same-sex marriage is discriminatory. It is discriminatory because it denies homosexuals the many benefits received by heterosexual couples. The right to marriage in the United States has little to do with the religious and spiritual meaning of marriage. It has a lot to do with social justice, extending a civil right to a minority group. This is why I argue for same-sex marriage. The freedom to marry regardless of gender preference should be allowed.
The average American citizen can get married to the woman or man of their dreams if they are black, white, Hispanic, fresh out of jail, or even an ex-convict... as long as it isn't a member of the same sex. In my opinion, same sex marriage should be completely legal and no one should have a problem with it. Believe it or not, there are still people in our world today who are extremely opposed to the idea of same sex marriage. What happened to everyone being equal? Thirty-three states still strictly ban same-sex marriage in the “land of the free”.
