One of the common causes a marriage will end in divorce is because the spouses fell out of love. Dr. William H. Doherty, a noted marriage scholar and therapist, is the author of the book Should I Keep Trying to Work it Out?. Dr. Doherty states, “Other significant reasons included too much arguing, infidelity, marrying too young, unrealistic expectations, lack of equality in the relationship, lack of preparation for marriage, and abuse” (Doherty 44). Another reason for divorce that is more commonly found in today’s society is “infidelity, or affairs, which can sometimes be overcome, especially with professional and/or religious help” (Doherty 44). Although there are several reasons for a marriage to end in a divorce, every relationship is dealt with differently.

It may cause a lot of heartache when the children finally realize that their parent's will never be together again. Parent's may never truly realize the impact that getting a new step family has on the people around them, maybe even their other relatives. It certainly makes for a completely new re-socialization of lives for the people who are affected by this. This is a rising pattern in the United States and parent's truly need to think about the mental, physical, and emotional impacts it has on the people around them. This can be a very hard adjustment and may sometimes result in another divorce, which will only cause more hardships.

Marriage is A Choice When a couple decides to sign the divorce papers, they should consider the consequences that may affect their children afterwards. Having parents who stayed married has impacted my life tremendously, and I will forever be grateful to live my life with parents who did not give up on each other, no matter what life threw at them. Marriage is the union of two people who are willing to vow to spend the rest of their lives together, but sometimes things do not always go as planned. Even though divorce is an option, and while there are pros and cons to having divorced parents, there are also pros and cons of having parents who stayed together. Marriages that are unable to cope with life stressors and exhibit poor problem solving skills will result in discontent with one another and ultimately end in divorce. While self-growth is experienced individually, it is uncommon for a married couple to stay unison throughout their lives. In turn, one spouse will be behind in the process and possibly choose to walk down a separate path, splitting the marriage in two. Remarriage can then occur and often blends families together, this is a difficult process and if not strategically executed it will devastate the marriage.
