This section will discuss the importance of having volunteers, volunteering and how the city of Corinth utilize volunteers. I will explain the recruitment, types of volunteering in Corinth, risk, how much is a volunteer worth and retention According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, About 62.6 million people volunteered for an organization at least once between September 2014 and September 2015. Although that number seems large there was a by 0.4 percentage point to 24.9 percent decline in volunteering in 2015. If the CPA volunteer wishes to join the VIPS the must take ten weeks of additional training. The requirement to be a VIPS volunteer is live or work in Denton County, have a valid driver’s license, pass background check, no felonies or misdemeanor convictions (depends on the type of misdemeanor), potential volunteer will be interviewed and must dedicated a minimum of 8 hours a month of service. VIPS provides links to resources and information about law enforcement and volunteer programs. It is funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, Office of Justice Programs, United States Department of Justice; is managed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Currently Denton County has seventeen VIPS volunteers and they are used throughout the county in different cities. The VIPS supports the sheriff’s department by performing duties that enable the staff to focus on public service duties. According to Lieutenant Hinojosa, the contact person for VIPS in Denton county, stated seventeen additional volunteer graduated from the program this year. In 2014, VIPS had a combined total of 1,640 volunteer hours that is about $38,376 dollars in volunteer service.
