The Importance of Vitamins
Vitamins are substances that the body uses to function and fight on diseases. The body can’t produce vitamins itself, so they have to be supplemented through diet. The discovery of these spectacular substances did not happen overnight. It took the time and effort of many scientists to find and isolate them. Today, we know how important vitamins are to the body, society, the science field, and even God as our Creator.
Until the 20TH Century, the world had a vague understanding about the causes of disease. For years, along with infections and toxins, and nutritional deficiencies were known to be the cause of many diseases, but some of the elements of a sufficient diet were unknown. There was a general belief that the only essential nutrients for a well balanced diet were proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and minerals. They are important to society because they give our bodies the resources to function healthily. They prevent serious diseases like scurvy, rickets, beriberi, and pellagra. Without vitamins, we are left with problems such as delayed growth and development, heart damage, weight loss, paralysis, depression, insomnia, impaired vision, and birth defects. The study of vitamins could be the gateway into a better quality of life for humans, as it could bring awareness to and stop the problem of vitamin deficiency. Vitamins are important to the science field because they are a key component in what keeps our bodies working. Scientists who study vitamins are making strides to more knowledge about different diseases and how the body works. With this continually expanding knowledge, cures can be found, and the way we understand nutrition can be built upon. Finally, vitamins relate to God because He created vitamins for our benefit.
