Honor in its most basic form is high respect or esteem. In the realm of the United States Navy, it is attached to bearing true faith and allegiance to our nation and conducting oneself in the highest ethical manner possible at all times with peers, seniors and juniors, even in public and private relations with those inside or outside the Navy and Armed Forces. It is synonymous with honesty, keeping one’s word, taking responsibility for one’s actions and being mindful and appreciative of the privilege to serve the country and our fellow Americans. In the Navy, it is tied to obeying the orders of those above you, demanding and reciprocating respect up and down the chain of command, being committed to positive changes and improvements. Additionally, it commitment means exhibiting the highest degree of moral character, day in and day out, working together as a team to improve the quality of our work, our people and ourselves. Having a commitment to the mission and to your fellow Sailors is highly crucial to the effectiveness of the Navy as it is most operative to know that a fellow Sailor is as deeply committed to whatever is put ahead of them, or the both of you, as you are. The point I’m trying to get out of this is disrespect in the military is a big thing, especially dealing or being disrespectful to a Non Commissioned Officer. Disrespect doesn’t only have to be with Non Commissioned Officers, it can be with Commissioned Officers, Warrant Officers, and Senior Non Commissioned Officers such as (Sergeant First Class, Master Sergeants, Sergeant Majors, and sometimes seasoned Staff Sergeants). Every culture in the world has its own unique set of values that they adhere to in life. The most important value to people is their honor. Honor is a very important factor in a person life that they will stop at nothing to make sure it is not lost. This endless pursuit of keeping honor can causes both positive and negative effects to a society. The reason honor is a main driving force in a person's life is for the simple fact that it determines how the society views that person's integrity, honesty and truthfulness to himself and family.
Loyalty, Duty, Service, Honor, Integrity, Courage, Commitment. The seven Army values, the three Navy core values, and the three Air Force core values: each branch of service possesses a codification of values and characteristics embodied by servicemen and women for generations; simply picking a handful of these qualities presents a logical and justifiable option for defining the essential qualities of a military officer. It is true an officer must personify and uphold such values, however, interpersonal skills and self-confidence are also invaluable traits necessary for the highest level of leadership and excellence demanded of a military officer.
Honor can be defined by how one holds them in the public eye. Others may say that honor is how you live your life when none can see your actions. However defined honor can play major roles in how a person will act in a given situation. The Crucible by Arthur Miller has excellent examples of how honor can manipulate people’s decisions in times of importance. John proctor holds his moral standpoint and does not falter into the temptations of selfishness, while Elizabeth would describe honor as how a person lives their lives. Some can even describe honor as what is most important in life; family. Giles believed that his life was the ultimate object he could sacrifice to maintain his family’s happiness. However honor can be defined, one thing is certain; Everyone has some degree of honor in their lives.
Catch-22 was definitely a catch! This “law” was the main metaphor of how crazy war really was and of the military authority. Joseph Heller used this catch in a humorous way, basically making it a loophole preventing any soldier from leaving the war. “Insane or not, the young men are indirectly forced to engage in combat and fight for a war they do not know about” (http://epubl.itu.se). He uses much black humor throughout the book, to relieve the horrors of war, death, and so on. He also uses so many unique techniques which can get so confusing, that the reader is distracted from the true terror and agony that people face in war. There are 3 specific examples of black humor in the book. For example, Heller makes the army unable to comprehend death and life. Secondly, he satirizes death and rape and last but not least miscommunication, which is key to everything.
Shafritz, Russell & Borick (2016) mention that honor is at the core of ethics and that integrity and honesty are basis for honor. A public official that shows integrity and honesty will conduct administrative affairs truthfully.
The Marine Corps transforms young civilians into a life of values: honor, courage, and commitment. These values are instilled in each recruit as they go through the eleven weeks process of boot camp. According to Marines these values are to the Corps and “comes before self” (p. 55). In American society we work to better ourselves first rather than as a whole.
As a cadet in the NJROTC program, the Navy's Core Value has changed my understandings of the role as a citizen of the United States. And because of honor, courage, and commitment it has somewhat helped me with what I've been through. Since I have took the time and actually understand what honor, courage, commitment means to me, it has assisted my everyday life and giving myself rules. And it has showed others the Navy core values, and doing so without telling but because of my actions. Getting the privilege to know honor, courage, commitment is like taking a big step in life.
The same idea of an unwavering hierarchy that extends beyond title and into the deep roots of merit are inherent in both concepts. Even dealing with other branches of service, there are certain expectations to be upheld when dealing with an officer, a senior enlisted, and even with your peers. Officers are saluted by enlisted members, just as junior enlisted members stand at parade rest when addressing Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO). This level of respect would continue on into a civilian environment, although no saluting would be present in civilian attire. For example, a lower enlisted member could be at a restaurant or a bar over the weekend and happen to see his Company Commander. Even out of the work environment and military setting, the should still subtly take each other’s rank into account with everything said, such as a “Sir” every now and then from the enlisted member as well as avoiding certain comments that could get a soldier in trouble when dealing with his Chain of Command. This same level of military bearing will also carry on into encounters with civilians as military members and prior service member can almost always be spotted in a crowd with relative ease. Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Being respectful is not hard it is simple, just treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
The United States Navy management style is extremely different from that on One Smooth Stone. The Navy works in an Administrative/Bureaucracy management style. There is a well defined hierarchy with formal rules and a understandable division in the labor force that is very impersonally and has the career based on the worth of the individual. The second characteristic of professionalism is responsibility. General responsibility creates the moral responsibility of marines and helps us understand the set of values which guide us. In addition, however, marines must also possess the values of other human beings and question service to a society which does not respect these values. These values include justice, common courtesy, human dignity and humbleness. A government which does not respect these values is illegitimate and cannot be said to serve the society it directs. To be loyal to a cause greater then my own is one reason that drove me to the Marines. Working to pay the next bill day in and day out is not what I want. My drive so far has been merely to survive and get the next fix(video games, sports, music, etc) HONOR: Taking a stand for something you believe in, fighting for those you love, so that they dont have to. Sacrificing many things so that your loved ones dont have to.
