Growing up, church on Sunday mornings was a given and backyard barbeques were the norm. I am from the beautiful suburbs of Tampa, Florida. I have lived there all of my life and have loved every part about it. In the past couple of years, my community has grown in faith tremendously; one of my close friends was hit by a car the fall semester of our senior year and was in a coma for many months. Our community came together, prayed for her and put our faith completely in God’s hands to heal her. This tragic event was a powerful reminder of what it means to be a community in Christ and the power that pray can have not only just in a community but also in my life alone. Most traditions in my family involve food, like for Christmas my older brother …show more content…
For the fourth of July, my whole family has a reunion in Kentucky. We barbeque, children play in the pool, I meet awkward family members who don’t even know my name but claim that I have gotten so big since the last time they saw me. I am not a naturally funny person so, I always rely on the jokes from popsicle sticks in the effort to be comical; my dad and grandfather make jokes about the past, which no one else understands. Kentucky comes with traditions itself, going to the horse race track early in the morning to watch the jockeys work out the race horses, getting breakfast at the track kitchen and admiring the neatly manicured horse farms. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays; my intermediate family goes to my grandmother 's (on my mother’s side) house. Three of my cousins that are around the same age as my older brother and I, live there with their parents as well. We all gather together in fellowship, eating …show more content…
I would consider us to be a very close knit family. My brother is my best friend and the biggest influence in my life. Without him, my life would be even more chaotic than it already is. I am blessed to have both sides of grandparents very close to me, and visit them often. My grandparents on my mother’s side are two of the most impactful people in my life. They are both from the south, so southern hospitality and good food are a certainty. My grandmother with the help from God defeated cancer, has had three hip replacements, two knee surgeries and is still one of the strongest believers I know. She has taught me how to cook and how to be a Godly woman in all circumstances. My grandfather is currently battling Parkinson’s but is still one of the best rifle and pistol target shooters I have ever met. When I was a little girl, he would always emphasize the importance of family, and how no matter who comes into our lives or where we go, family is a constant. Even with all the trials they go through, they stay strong in their faith and continue to be an example for the generations looking up to them. In my family, English is our primary language. Proper etiquette has always been stressed as well as not using poor slang or foul language. My parents raised my brother and I in a southern household, so when addressing authority, they are “ma 'am” or “sir”, no exceptions. I was taught that the
Manners have always been very important to Southerners. We must respect our elders and say yes ma’am and no ma’am. Saying please and thank you are also extremely important. A child being disrespectful was not tolerated, at least not in the home where I was raised. Most of the childhood friends I had growing up were raised the same way. Everyone was expe...
After seeing though the eyes of my pastor I’ve come to realize the importance of faith and committing to one’s beliefs. Returning to church after two massive losses has helped my mother in many ways and it has also taught me as a young man how small things that I could do would turn to have a big impact on someone’s life the same way my pastor impacted my life and the life of my siblings.
Traditions are like a two-edged sword. They can be very powerful and helpful or they can be very hurtful and painful. Traditions gain momentum with each passing year, and in many cases they become difficult or impossible to stop. In “The Lottery,” Shirley Jackson uses situation irony, suspense, and dialogue to show that some groups of people have traditions they do not want to end, even if there is no reason for the tradition.
“The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is a short story depicting an annual event that takes place on the very same day each year in a small town. The reader learns that all residents of the town must attend, including the children. Jackson thoroughly describes the setting and the characters in the story to ensure the reader will not question the importance and significance of this day. As Jackson draws the reader into the event, she purposefully leaves the unspeakable outcome of this lottery drawing until the end. Jackson uses an obsolete and antiquated tradition to expose human evilness and hypocrisy.
My family consists of my mother, father, and myself. I was adopted at birth and was raised by a family member
A family might include anyone related by blood or by adoption such as: step parents, grandparents acting as parents, and even brothers and sisters sharing the same household. However, worldwide “the family is regarded as the most ba...
It appears to be one of the many features I first experienced while growing up. Coming from a Spanish-speaking Mexican family, respect is one of the most important traits I was taught. In my household, it was especially important to know what specific actions I could perform in front of my parents, Florencia and Francisco. Of course, there was the typical no talking back nor rolling of the eyes at them but a big factor was language. Specifically, in Spanish, there are two different forms in which l could speak to someone. These two forms are the formal, typically used with someone who is older, and informal, used with someone who is younger. As the name of the forms implied one was used when we wanted to be more formal and the other used at any other point. Growing up, this played a big factor when speaking to aunts, uncles, strangers, teachers, and most importantly parents. Undeniably, my siblings, Laura and Daniel, and I were taught to only use the formal with that group of people as a sign of respect. Later in life, I realized that because my parents raised me that way I had specific standards on how I want younger children to treat me. For example, my niece and nephews, Abigail, Carlos, and Esteban, were all raised like me and know that when speaking to that same group of people, they have to use the formal form. Today, I am an overall respectful person towards everyone I interact with no matter what the
I have three siblings along with three nephews. I have a younger sister, older sister, and one older brother. My older sister is the one that had my nephews. We all lived under the same roof until I moved out for college. My mother was more like my father in the house because my father was away working for us, and even though my siblings are her children, it seems that they 're her siblings too. It felt that I was the parent of my nephews and little sister because of the way I had to care for them because everyone else was working. I connect with my immediate family firmly. We always look out for each other because we mean so much to one another. I
Proverbs 22:6 states, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (King James Bible. 1973). When you train your children, you are passing doing rituals. Rituals that you learned from your parents and your parents learned from their parents. Some people think that they don’t have any family rituals. However, they do not realize that everyday task that you do with your family can be considered a ritual. Family rituals can consist of eating meals together, watching a favorite show each night, and all the birthdays and holidays that you celebrate with your family they can even help out with some behavior issues. In one particular video, the author talks about how family rituals can help build an
When the word “family” is discussed, most people think of mothers, fathers, and other siblings. Some people think of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even cousins and more on the pedigree tree. Without family in people's lives, they would not be the same people that they grew up to be today and in the future. When people hear the word family they think about, the ones who will help them in any way they can whether it’s money, support, advice, or anything to help them succeed in life. Family will forever be the backbone of support.
Traditions and cultural legacies has always been a thing of the pass going to our future. Families study the form of traditions for many years. It’s in insight in to what is our pass and to what may become our future. Families have worked hard to keep this a alive in each one of the generations that is coming up behind them. Traditions and cultural legacies has been the idea was of identify our family history. It allows us to know just who we are and where we come from. This paper is going to be a look on how do family traditions and cultural legacies contribute to and/or inhibit an individual’s self-identity? The important of this
My family is who I have socialized most with since they were the first ever people I interacted with. Family has had a large influence over who I am today because they are the people who I learned almost everything from (primary socialization). The reason I have such high morals and values is because of my family. By observing and taking from their behavior I was able to form my own values through nurture. Although they taught me a lot of beneficial things that make me a better person, I have also learned from some of my family members bad habits. My uncle always smoked around the kids, including myself, when I was younger and I never liked the smell and now I associate that memory with cigarettes and it makes me not have any desire to smoke whatsoever. I also had another uncle who went to jail a lot for selling drugs and other related things, and since I definitely did not want to end up in jail I now make smart decisions, and associate myself with people who benefit me. On the whole my family has made me a nobler person by both their good and bad
In the end, my family as a whole is the reason that I am the person that I am today. It’s the way that different personalities all come together as one, the way my family handles hard situations, and the closeness I have with them that has really impact me and my life. I know that I would not be as cheerful, hardworking, or positive without seeing all these qualities around me for a majority of my life. It’s astonishing how just 6 people can change you for the better. I know I would be in a very different place in my life if it wasn’t for my family. Family is different for everyone, and mine is truly the best people for me.
I like to think of family as the people God gives you to take care of in life. Psalms 11:29 states, “Whoever brings ruin on their family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be the servant to the wise.” It is important to honor family. However, one does have a duty to help all fellow man if he is in the position to do so. Although, all members of the family are usually busy, family members should gather together in a meeting to discuss ways that they can spend quality time with each other. One of the best ways to bond within a family is to vacation together. This gets the family out of their normal habitat, usually in a setting where they do not know many other people. Therefore, the family members have to communicate with one another. It is also important to have time where daily such as over dinner where everyone is free of from distractions. During this time all cell phones and other electronics should be put away, in order to facilitate open
These customs must be a part of who every person is. This should be, not only because it is polite or correct, but because we are humans we have feelings, we have a dignity that deserves respect despite anything—respect. Learning manners at home helps an individual have a stronger foundation on what is correct to do based on respect and discipline that apply to social manners that contribute to the social development of society. In the end, as one grows and matures with time, it is in our hands the decision we make everyday. We choose and control what we do or say and it is up to us whether we want to keep a chaotic manners-free society or make the difference and
