Key Term Choice I chose Total Quality Management (TQM) for this discussion because I am interested in pursuing a career in customer service or manufacturing management. I am passionate about helping others succeed, while finding efficient ways to improve systems and processes that obtain high results. Business managers need to have a vast knowledge of the planning, decision-making and implementation of procedures that help achieve the goals of the organization, and at the same time generate an excellent product or service. This can be achieved by improving the quality of operations in all areas of the organization. After much research, it was found that TQM can benefit both the efficiency and performance of organizations. Satterlee (2014) defined TQM as “people-focused management system that aims at continual increase in customer satisfaction at continually lower cost” (p. 254). The three keys to success require companies to be customer-focused, develop teamwork and participation, and be willing to continue improving and learning (Saterlee, 2014). Some ways these three actions can be implementing is through the hiring of the proper management team who will be properly trained and have the needed knowledge. The company will also need advanced technology to analyze, collect data and evaluate performance in order to find areas where employees or processes are inefficient. Furthermore, through teamwork development the company allows employees to participate in the development of strategies to find the best solutions ate lower costs. For example, the company can build teams tasked with specific goals. Then, implement the goals and eliminate unnecessary activities. Her techniques (5S’S) to create a quality environment included SEIRI, SEITON, SEISO, SEIKETSU, and SHITHSUKE, which arrived from Japanese words. These techniques are great for line production manufacturers because they promote excellent organization from sorting of materials, inspection, cleaning, and discipline. Her case study included an audit of each of the aforementioned areas to find its effectiveness (Boca 2015). This is an excellent TQM because it allows managers to evaluate each area of production and obtain information to improve performance.
