To amend something is to change it to make it better than it once was before. There are twenty-seven amendments in the United States Constitution. The first ten amendments make up the Bill of Rights while the other seventeen do not. Two of the most important amendments include the nineteenth and the twenty-sixth. The Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in 1920, and the Twenty-Sixth Amendment was ratified in 1971. Both amendments involve voting rights, and it is crucial we examine these two since they serve such an important role in our American lives today. The Nineteenth Amendment allows women to vote, while the Twenty-Sixth Amendment allows anyone eighteen years and older vote. The Nineteenth Amendment is far more important than the Twenty-Sixth …show more content…
Before the 1920s, women were expected to wear very uncomfortable outfits. One of the items that had to wear was a tight corset because they were “expected to not move around as much as men” (19th). In the time of protesting for their rights, women would wear bloomers. Starting in the 1920s, women began to wear skirts, blouses, long dresses, and sweaters. Another prime article of clothing women in the 20s wore was a hat. Overall, women became more independent in their choices of clothing and dressed how they wanted to. There was a lot less pressure on women to look professional all of the …show more content…
The turnout for young voters has always been the lowest of all age ranges. Before the voting age was eighteen, it was twenty-one. The main argument that started this amendment was that since you can fight in the war at eighteen, you should be able to vote at that age too. While that point is valid, it has also been pointed out that young adults are “more susceptible to manipulation either by their parents” or by the politicians use of media ("Voting”). That is very true. Someone’s biggest influence of opinion on politics is their family. Therefore, most of the votes from these young adults would show what their parents think and not what they do. It is also hard for them to have an educated opinion since eighteen year olds typically do not have a lot of interest in politics. Secondly, the opposition also mentions that there is a lack of maturity in most late teens and many do not have “the life experience on which to ground political judgments” ("Voting”). Between the ages eighteen to twenty-one, the life into adulthood is only beginning. It is very accurate to say that life experience is lacked by the age of

The fashion of the 1920’s varied in style, color, and material in comparison to the modern day fashion we have today. The 1920’s, also known as the Roaring Twenties, was a time period where people went against traditions and tried different styles and ideas. Fur coats, bow pumps, tailored suits, and wool sweaters are just a small portion of what people wore in the 1920’s. However, fashion from the 1920’s can be divided into more complex branches such as social class, sports events, and occupations.
It’s very unsettling to know that there was a six percent decrease in young voters (ages 18-29) in the 2012 election compared to 2008 (Circle Youth data). In 2007 the National Conference of State Legislatures publicly released a report and data set on voter turnout in democratic countries. This is a quote from that report titled Getting out the Vote, “It should be noted that in 1972, 18-year-olds were added to the eligible voting population, thus decreasing the percentages. Nonetheless, voter tu...
After women fought for their right to vote and Congress passed the19th Amendment of the Constitution, women believed they were capable of doing anything. Before the 1920s, women were considered lower than men, treated poorly, and didn’t have equal opportunities. Women were not given the same opportunities as men because it was believed that women could not tolerate as much work as a man. Women were not educated and therefore didn’t have jobs. They were housewives who cooked, cleaned, and took care of their children. Women also weren’t able to display their body, for example skirts were worn down to their ankles. Revolutionary fashions during the 1920s made it acceptable for women to separate themselves from unrevealing and unflattering styles. Miss America and Flappers helped the world reconsider the part that women play in society. A door of opportunity opened for women in careers, sports, and even education. As a result women were able to desert the constrained fashions and get involved in male controlled jobs and sports.
Showing off your body was the new trend of the ‘20s. Flappers of the 1920 era started wearing shorter dresses and sleeveless tops to seem keener. Before the 1920’s, it was rare for women to even show their ankles let alone their knees. Not only did women start to wear “skimpier” clothing, but they also garnished themselves with accessories. It was all about that bling. Girls were obsessed with pearls, diamonds, and just about anything that looked expensive. They hated cheap dull accessories and wanted the real McCoy. Clothing was not the only change during this time. The way women did their hair and makeup changed. Flappers started wearing a lot of makeup and styling their hair differently. “Flappers raised their hemlines, bobbed their hair, and applied make up with abandon.” (Armburst, Lloyd) No one wanted to be considered a bug-eyed Betty, and they did whatever it took to make themselves more alluring. This new style of women was the bee’s
Have you ever seen the movie Great Gatsby? You would think the clothing today was totally different from the 20’s. Gatsby’s clothes was fun and colorful. In the 1920’s fashion became a huge thing for women because they were giving the right to vote.
Fashion of the 1920’s was also known as the roaring 20’s. Fashion in the 1920’s became more relaxed in the 20’s. In the early 1920’s the normal fashion was dropped waistlines, long, cylindrical skirts, 7” to 10” below the knee. Women finally received the right to vote, with this new right women also
Tremendous change was taking place in the United States during the 1920s. The 19th Amendment altered the roles of women by giving women the right to vote. By extension, the 19th Amendment allowed women to exercise more freedom and independence within society. This new found freedom influenced women and enabled them to modernize. Women started using more makeup, wearing shorter dresses that ended at the kneecap and cutting their hair short as an act of rebellion against society’s norms. Women also started to advance and expand their education so that they could go into a career of their own choosing. These modernized 1920s women were collectively known as the “flappers.” The 1920s was a time of mass consumerism, which eventually led to a rise
As requested by the committee chair, I have examined the 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendments of our Constitution. It is imperative for the participants of the Constitutional Convention to update, and furthermore, enhance the Bill of Rights. The amendments were created with a valuable perspective on individual rights in the 1700's. Today, in 2010, our country has developed in the use of language, our principles, and our overall society. After close examination of the amendments, it has come to my attention that they no longer read to today's society. Essentially, I would like to continue the amendments using the same guidelines our forefathers used centuries ago, but include new aspects updating the Constitutional Amendments to reflect our current nation.
As of the ratification of the 26th amendment in 1971, the voting age in the US is 18. As I turn 18 this coming summer I now have the chance to participate in elections local, state, and national wide. The history of youth voting has changed over time with that more 18-24 year olds are voting as time goes on. The question comes to mind about voting in that why would someone want to vote and if it’s just a waste of time. I believe that if people have the chance to vote, then they should which is why I am going to vote in elections to come in the future.
Today in America, less than half of young voters between the ages of 18 and 24 vote (TheBestColleges.org). What most of these new adults fail to realize, is that their government depends on them to vote and elect new leaders to represent their country. Many of them make excuses to avoid voting, when really, they benefit most from voting.
It is a time if economic change, thanks to Our Presidents, Harding and Coolidge, companies grew larger, creating more and more new jobs. Wages increased, people began to have enough money to buy new kinds of products. Since the beginning of the 1920s we have had many significant and crucially important things happen. We have become more urban than rural, we have done this because of the many difficulties of living in the country, their are many good things that go with living in the city more jobs and better opportunities. Cotton is now cheaper due to overproduction. The 19th Amendment has been ratified. Congress has passed an immigration limitation, so we don't have too many immigrants in the U.S., and their are no undesirable immigrants here. Giants
At the beginning of the 20th century it was a moment when the U.S was starting to become more powerful than other countries and that’s when an exposure of multiple fashion began to occur in the 1900s. Fashion such as: corsets in which incudes a variety of corsets created throughout the Era, lingerie dresses, hobble skirts, over/under skirts, V-necks, flappers,
