Have you ever wanted to sit down and just relax for five minutes? Our lives are very busy. As other countries would say about America, they are always on the go. We never stop to think about ourselves. We always have too much to do, such as go to work every day to pay the bills. America is after the money. But once in a while we need to think of just ourselves. Some people need to engage in some type of relaxation. It would help them feel better by not feeling so edgy. Like they didn’t accomplish anything or have too much to accomplish. Relaxing can help people focus on their body and have control over it. I have previously heard of the relaxation response. According to Herbert Benson, the response is defined as your personal ability to encourage your body to release chemicals and brain signals that make your muscles and organs slow down and increase blood flow to the brain. He also states that regular practice of the relaxation response can be an effective treatment for a wide range of stress-related disorders, as stated before. Benson studied that relaxation promotes better health, especially in individuals with hypertension. The relaxation response is the opposite reaction to the “fight or flight” response. In the morning I engaged in the activity about 7a.m. At night I practiced anywhere from 6p.m.-10p.m. Each session lasted for ten minutes. When I was in my bedroom, I tried it both sitting and laying on my bed, and sitting on the floor. In my living room I did it both sitting on the floor and sitting in a chair. Far as my dining room goes, I just sat in the chair at the table. I tried it laying down a couple times just to be different. To see if it made a difference in concentrating. The norm is to see someone sitting crisscross with their hands on their knees. But I dared to be different. Living in the city there are many distractions. Living in the city is different from living in the country. Some of my distractions were my cell phone, cars going by when my window was open, my roommate, television, and the dehumidifier. When first starting this activity I could not concentrate on what I was supposed to be doing because of another big distraction. My thoughts were simply going a hundred miles an hour. Thinking about what homework I had to do, when I had to work, and what was all going on these next two weeks. Some of these distractions were hard to
Franz Kafka’s “Meditation” is a collection of short stories that allow the reader a glimpse into the narrators’ minds as they reflect on their life. Two of these stories are “The Wish to Be a Red Indian,” and “Rejection.” “The Wish to Be a Red Indian” uses structure, diction and symbolism to convey the narrator’s wish for physical escape and freedom. “Rejection” conveys a indecisiveness between adventure and routine through structure and diction. Both vignettes express a similar wish for escape while they use contrasting structures but similar styles.
However, meditation is not as common within Buddhism as most believe. There is a large assumption “that Buddhism and meditation go hand in hand”, but the majority of Buddhists have focused on “cultivating moral behavior, preserving the Buddha’s teachings (dharma), and acquiring good karma”(Braun 2014, p.1). Meditation and Buddhism are often assumed to be one and same, but this is also not true. As Buddhism has gained popularity among lay people it’s practices have changed Buddha’s teaching of the middle path has adapted to meditation being “possible in the city” rather than with monks in jungles and caves (p.4). As seen in Burma, in less than 75 years Buddhism and meditation were able to grow “from a pursuit of the barest sliver of the population to a duty of the ideal citizen” (p.5). The feeling of stress is inevitable to avoid and remove entirely from our lives. As we go through life and our stress levels rise, for various reasons, resulting in the feeling of worry, anxiety, insomnia, etc. We search for strategies to assist with decreasing the feeling of stress or to better help cope with it. Coping is defined as “managing taxing circumstances, expending effort to solve life’s problems, and seeking to master or reduce stress” (p521). Individuals perform a wide range of different activities to help manage stress and decrease its effects such as working out at a gym regularly, attending routine social gatherings, and reading books. One stress reducer that our society often overlooks is nature and its benefits. There have been studies on forest bathing, which involves walking a forest trail or sitting on a boulder and observing nature with all five senses, that proves to minimize stress.
There are five studies which investigated individuals who meditate and physiological changes with their bodies. These studies mainly focused on parasympathetic and sympathetic activities, cardiovascular activities, and immune activities. Most of the research has centered in investigating the nervous system itself.

Using the open monitoring concept of meditation, I become disconnected from my feelings and thoughts. This is a process of expanding attention and growing detached from the ongoing experience (author, pg 212). Meditation allows me to reduce rumination and guide my thoughts towards a more positive direction. The process enables me to evaluate the thoughts and understand that some are insignificant, which means there is no reason to obsess over them. I wake up and spend twenty minutes meditating, and this allows me to disconnect my negative thoughts and will enable me to focus on an upcoming day. If my thoughts are still prevalent, then I can not concentrate on what is being taught or said to me because I am in a spiral of negative what-ifs. Studies show that physical relaxation occurs during meditative periods. Oxygen consumption, heart rate, and carbon dioxide elimination all decrease in response to meditation (author, pg 212). Meditation allows an individual to block distraction and improve cognitive processes (Tsuji, 2017, 47). All these factors contribute to lowering stress levels in my body and allowing me to stay calm and concentrated on the right things instead of panicking.
