The Manhattan Project was necessary to the development of atomic and nuclear weapons in America, and it changed the face of war and weapons forever. The Manhattan Project was important to America because it developed the use of atomic weapons. This helped, but also changed for the worse, America and other countries.

What Was the Manhattan Project? The Manhattan Project was the exploration of atomic energy. Scientists from all around America, and later Tube Alloys, which was their British counterpart, came together to form one of the most powerful weapons of all time. He signed the paper that allowed the scientists and other important role players to create the atomic bomb, and he also helped in the making of it by setting apart secret places in the United States for the testing and making of the new bomb. Roosevelt’s vice president, Harry S. Truman, also helped and later took President Roosevelt’s place. After Roosevelt’s death, Truman became the president and was informed about the Manhattan Project. To the soldiers, it didn’t look like Japan was going to surrender, even though they were in a very weak place. The United States needed a way to finish the war. After Roosevelt signed the paper to let them start studying uranium and the atomic bomb, they had to begin looking for a test site. It had to have a relatively flat landscape and there couldn’t be anyone living on or around it. It also had to be close to Los Alamos, where one of their bases was. They found a clear area, near Alamogordo, that they could use to test the atomic bomb. They code-named it Trinity. The scientists worked until they found and successfully created the a bomb, and on July 16, 1945 the first atomic bomb that the world had ever had, that they called Gadget, was dropped on Trinity. It destroyed a section with more power than 20,000 tons of TNT. After the scientists started on the ones that they would use in war. They didn’t make any more for testing because it took too long and was too expensive just to waste on one test
