In addition to teaching credentials, teachers should be trained to become well experienced, demonstrate skills in a variety of ways, and be exposed to technological resources. To begin with, it 's important for teachers to gain experience in the classroom and in school settings. Student teachers must practice with real students in a classroom to "get a taste of what it 's like to teach" (Treadwell). Amy Treadwell, a teacher for over 10 years, took many courses in children 's literature and even has a master 's degree from DePaul University in Chicago. According to her, although she thought she was approved, on her first day of work, she really didn 't know how to teach a child how to read. Therefore, student teachers must gain experience through classroom settings. Furthermore, there should be higher levels of evaluation for new teachers, and less tests. Different methods of evaluation are needed other than written tests from books; because "everyone can read a textbook …show more content…
Consequently, teachers should be taught material and be able to explain or demonstrate it in different ways (Loewenberg). For example, explaining fractions in more than one way or gaining and maintaining the attention of the class. Teacher training plays a big role in producing effective educators in our nation and it is a vital step to improve the quality of our teachers in today 's society. Besides accomplishing training with perfection, teachers should be able to speak English fluently and correctly to insure the betterment of a student’s education. The fluency and pronunciation of English can be vital especially when teaching a class that is based on the foundations of it. A reasonable and sensible solution to help non-native English speaking teachers would be by demanding them to take programs that enhance their pronunciation skills to ensure the effectiveness of their
As I read these articles, I agreed with almost everything that was said. The Great Teacher Question: Beyond Competencies, by Edward R. Ducharme begins with a sentence that basically sums up my reason for teaching, “I begin this essay by defining a great teacher as one who influences others in positive ways so that their lives are forever altered” (Ducharme, 1991 p. 2). Over the course of a student’s education they will have many teachers, but there are maybe only one or two who are THE teacher. The teacher who impacts this child’s life in a positive way forever. The rest of the articles follow this same theme, suggesting ways that teachers can become THE teacher. One of the most important qualities I found in these articles (and one I
In 2010, Charlotte Danielson wrote an article, “Evaluations That Help Teachers”, for the magazine The Effective Educator. The purpose of this article was to explain how a teacher evaluation system, such as her own Framework for Teaching, should and can actually foster teacher learning rather than just measure teacher competence, which is what most other teacher evaluation systems do. This topic is especially critical to decision-making school leaders. Many of the popular teacher evaluation systems fail to help schools link teacher performance with meaningful opportunities for the teachers to reflect on and learn from in order to grow professionally. With the increased attention on the need for more rigorous student standards, this then is an enormous opportunity missed. Students can only achieve such rigorous expectations if their teachers can effectively teach them, and research has shown that teachers who are evaluated by systems that hold them to accountability and provide them for continuous support and growth will actually teach more effectively.
Teacher evaluations have been and continue to be under scrutiny. Major reform efforts are taking place to improve the process. Traditional teacher evaluations are no longer considered satisfactory. Such evaluations typically occur one or two times a year and are administered, in most cases, by the school principal. There are many reasons why traditional teacher evaluations are looked down upon. One of the reasons is because of the fact they are done so infrequently. Very little can be observed regarding the teaching and learning processes (O’Donovan, 2011). This can lead to a very unfair representation of a teacher’s performance since much of what a teacher can do, cannot be observed in one or two observations. It is also questioned whether the judgments of administrators are valid due to both the infrequency and lack of evaluator training (O’Donovan, 2011; Milanowski, 2011). Traditional evaluations, furthermore, have been found to be very ineffective in the way in which they are scored. Most educators receive high marks which makes it very difficult to determine differences in teachers’ abilities (Long, 2011). Once again, this is probably a result of an absence in evaluator training and a common understanding of what effective teaching looks like (O’ Donovan, 2011; Long, 2011). The greatest problem with traditional teacher evaluations is the fact that they do nothing to improve the bottom-line: student and teacher performance (O’Donovan, 2011; Milanowski, 2011).
It has been said that people will do what is inspected not what is expected. I believe that teachers want to teach. As an administrator it is my duty to ensure the teachers have opportunities to improve and receive training. Good teachers want to be treated as professionals. As an administrator I feel teachers should know how they would be observed and evaluated, the goals of the process and the results of the evaluation. Teachers that are not being effective need to have opportunities to use data to help them understand how they can improve. The idea of value-added gains is an idea that can be used to inform teachers of their effectiveness. The administrator needs to poll and track teacher and student data to be sure that the observations
Teaching, like many professions (such as medical and legal), requires constant and ongoing learning. Teachers receive extensive formal training, including four years of college classroom work, in many cases one year of apprenticeship, and post-BA credits to maintain certification. All of this training is necessary because students need more than planned curricula and substantial classroom time to succeed.
In order to understand how teacher evaluations can be positive, we need to look at their purpose and how districts do teachers evaluations. According to different articles written by Education Leadership, reformers many times neglect teacher evaluations as a tool to improve student learning, this is because most schools lack credible systems of measuring the quality of
To be an effective teacher and make a difference in a student’s life in the classroom, the teacher must always be positive with students. To have a negative attitude or discourage a student in anyway can cause them to regress in the class and in their lessons and will ultimately cause behavior problems for the teacher during class. The teacher must have good organizational skills. A classroom that is disorganized and does not have a cohesive flow with all materials and lessons organized in the right places will cause confusion in class and it will add to the inefficiency of the classroom. A teacher needs to learn how to write a lesson plan. Lesson plans need to be well thought out and organized with all materials prepared ahead of time. It is always best to review the lesson plans a few times to make sure the
Until the twentieth century, teachers had very little preparation and training to becoming an educator. Teacher training typically involved one to two years at a teacher’s college before being employed at a local school, where teachers had to follow strict rules and regulations- even outside of the school. However, teachers have recently been working hard towards being professionals in their fields and they have earned the right to be judged on their success at work, rather than their behavior outside of the school. For the greater good of society, teachers have been striving to reach a full professional status.
“I teach the way I was taught.” This quote usually conjures a negative picture. I will not only explain how I would teach if I did not have books, pencils, paper, or a smartboard, but also I will discuss how my teaching would change based on that scenario. I will followup with two reflections on experiences I have had, one of which was as a teacher and the other as an adult student.
It provides the fundamental and advanced knowledge needed to improve the well-being of a country. Education is critical to the development of a country’s youth, as the popular saying goes, children are the future. The education received from teachers can either leave a lasting impact or have little or no effect on understanding. The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation asserted that there is a need for “new paradigms, new practices and new people” (as cited in Holaday et al, 2007, 99). Professional development of teacher is required, as mentioned by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, “to build a culture supportive of a new generation of scholar citizens” (Holaday et al, 2007, p.99). Thus, it is imperative that the teachers’ in all institutions in a country receive the best possible training and resources needed to fulfil the responsibilities set before
Education is more than just gathering knowledge and skills. For many children, the education system structures who they will become as individuals and how they shape society. This is an integral part of being an educator; a responsibility that should be taken seriously. For one to have such responsibility, I would agree that caring is an essential trait of a teacher.
This paper explores four main questions. Those questions are why I want to become a teacher, what or who influence me, what I hope to accomplish as a teacher, and what will by my legacy in my classroom. The answers based upon these questions will vary depending what they are asking. I will explore each question in depth and make it unique to me. Personally, I have a connection with teaching because back at home I used to work at a child development center and had my own classroom of fourteen little three year- olds. Therefore, I want to become a teacher because I love being with kids and it would be a dream come true. I want to accomplish many things as a teacher, but mainly gain the trust from my students. Also, the person who influenced me to decide to become a teacher is my neighbor/best friend, and she made me realize that my legacy in my classroom would not just be to make sure the students learn, but to make my students feel loved.
Education has played an important role in people’s lives and receiving the best education is a right to all humans, but now in days we can see that our education system is in deep distress. This is made evident by the low rate of graduates; that’s why our education system needs to be improved. Many people think that our government is responsible for our bad education system, However, teachers are the real issue even though many teachers are saying they 're doing their best, they’re not. How do we improve our education system? For a start, we need to provide better teaching programs for teachers to improve their skills and make them earn their tenure instead of just giving it to them.
In the classroom teachers need to be flexible to put in to practice many different
Being a teacher is not an easy task as many people could think. To be a teacher does not only imply to know the subject to be taught, it also includes being willing to constantly improve oneself integrally, as much as updating the resources and materials one uses in teaching. Reflecting and analyzing over and over again the best way to teach to learn and how to make students to extend what has been learned. The many hours spend in the classroom will never be enough to plan lessons, prepare materials, review pupils tasks and exams, as well, all the administrative requirements one has to cover for whatever institution we work. Besides all this a good teacher, a professional one, will have to find the time to keep preparing to improve oneself.
