Up late again, cramming for that math quiz tomorrow morning? Recalling the moments when I was a senior at La Sierra High School, I always hated math, as it was my worse subject. I never took notes in class and my mind always drifted off into a world of swords and magic. When quizzes came around, I would cram the night before and would be satisfied to get a passing grade. Years later, a freshmen at college, I was not happy with just skating by anymore. I wanted to excel in all my classes. I realized by having a good routine and good studying habits, time management, and taking excellent notes will help me to achieve my goal such as improve my G.P.A.. Having a space where it is quiet, comfortable and having no distractions is best because it will allow me concentrate on the subject on hand. For instance, I live with my sister, Catheryne, and she loves watching television shows. The show she is currently watching is “iZombie”, which she would marathon after she gets off work. Thus, studying with my room next to hers is a difficult task, as my mind would focus on math for the first few minutes, then seconds later I would be hearing zombies eating brains. While it is annoying to study while she is home, working around her schedule or going to the library gives me the space need to finish what I need to do. In addition, many people are accustomed to multitasking, whether it is checking text messages, answering phones, or even having multiple web browsers open, people get easily distracted. Taking notes starts in the class room, so having paper, pens, pencils, highlighters is a must. Absorbing key terms and ideas becomes easier when written down and having the facts in written form becomes easier to do when reviewing at a future time. Furthermore, listening is also important for note taking. The knowledge I get is mostly acquired through actively listening to what the professor is saying. Before, I would go to class thinking, “Ugh, I don’t what to be here, when class is going to be over, so I can go home”. I realized that is not a positive mindset going into a lecture.
