The Importance Of Storytelling

Long, long ago, there was no form of the written word. Everything that had happened was either passed orally or forgotten. With this, lots of legends were created. Imagine, an ancient group of people sitting around a burning fire hearing the elder of the group what he or she had experienced or heard when they were young. The older people of the group listen and try to recall each detail as it is being said to tell it later in their lives. However, the younger generations sit there in awe and try to imagine the story as it unfolds. Although both generations hear the same story, the older ones will remember specific details while the younger people will let their imagination soar and expand. In both ways the story that is being told prolongs; the story will not be told the same way if told the next day by each generation. Storytelling is important because it makes you remember details which develop your imagination.

When you expand your mind you increase your memory. Once your memory has more space, you are able to pull from more parts of your life. When you use your imagination you utilize things you remember whether you experienced it for yourself, saw, or heard about it from someone else. When you expand your mind you are able to take those little fragments and create something out of nothing allowing you to have more ideas. This also opens you up to ideas which might not be your own. If you happen to remember more of what others have done before you, those details can be used to help you create something of your own. This happens with any stories beginning writers create. By reading other stories you remember details about those stories which make them great, then often use those details to brainstorm your own ideas.
