Once one puts information out there, that person can no longer trust that the information will not be spread. In a recent TED talk called “Why Privacy Matters”, Alessandra Acquisti mentioned a study he did all about social media websites. In the past years, these kind of websites have become very popular. Anyone can easily find old friends or new love interests and what they like, where they go and so many other things about them. But, according to Professor Acquisti’s study, people should start to think twice about the information they put on these websites. He talks about how through information people put on these websites, hackers and other companies can get a lot of information about them which can be scary because most people can never know what they can do with that. However, in a way, one allows that information to be out there because they put it out there. It’s all about responsibility. Every person liable to what they say to others and what they put on the internet.
In the 20th century, it took very little time to find something fun to do. Outdoor activities such as sports, hide-and-go-seek, tag, etc. brought happiness to many around the world. By the end of the 90s, many turned away from these outdoor activities and looked to social media for entertainment. “The first social media site that everyone can agree actually was a social media website called Six Degrees” (Terrell). Six Degrees was the first site where one could make a profile and chat with friends. By the early 2000s, more than 100 million people had access to social media, and in 2003 the new giant came to scratch the surface of social media, Myspace. Even though Myspace lasted for about three years, it inspired many other social media giants
Social media has structured today’s society into a bland, staccato, and dissuading social dystopia. Today’s incredible technological advancements bring to us glistening pieces of technology like smartwatches and smartphones that we wouldn’t have fathomed would come to existence 5 years prior. All these new gadgets that have been tailored to be an extension of our bodies and minds simply detract from the human experience and make us unappreciative of the limited time we have. We must not follow one another like blind sheep; let us defy the social norms and live life like entropy is a lie.
One out of every five youths online is approached by an online sexual predator, with the integration of social networking; these numbers are alarmingly on the rise (Guo). In present day, it is nearly impossible to find someone who doesn’t at the very least know of social networks, so it is crucial that the general public know about the many negative effects these networks bring. It’s even more imperative that the public know that any existing or rising social networks are not to be trusted. Social networking could be considered negative for society as it provides sexual predators with opportunities, is a source for unhealthy addiction, and disconnects users from the real world.
The literature identified have strong social relationships in the flesh of strong folk and societal connectedness. The recent explosion in social media had run to a phenomenal upsurge in the accessibility. A brief overview of the same challenges of measuring Facebook use and conduct. Researchers have centered on the integration of social media into the daily lives and social conduct of users. As Internet use increases in adults over 65 years (Zickur, 2010), researchers have recommended further investigations into social media use; as well as the role of this is in societal conduct. With the level of exposure that teens are facing today by joining the social networking trend, they often forget the dangers of social networking such as stalkers and pedophiles, who may use the sites as a major tool of the trade. Said dangers can befriend naïve teens and lure them into dangerous situations. For example, Raymond Wang had a friend being stalked by an unknown person through one of the social networking sites. This stalker acquired private information about her via Facebook, and it got to the point where the stalker was sending her threatening or perverted letters to her actual mailbox detailing what he would do to her. “This has really affected her a lot because now she’s scared other stalkers might do the same and she doesn't want that to happen or have anything happen to her.” (Wang 19) Even though users are given the option to make one’s profile private, there is still the looming threat that stalkers are able to gather enough information about the person’s whereabouts. Another similar incident happened to Regina Chau, a member of a social networking site catered to the raver lifestyle, Plurlife. When she first joined with her offline friends she liked everything about the SNS, but “[where] most of the people you accept to your friends list would probably be strangers.” (Chau 18) she had befriended a person she did not know offline and one these “friends” got a little too friendly with her; “he would keep asking over and over if I wanted to meet up with him at the next event. I found this a little creepy and did not message him back after that.
Twitter and Facebook are only two of the online connections people use today to stay in contact with friends and family. The internet is the place to interact with new people and a way to expose yourself to strangers. The partial anonymity available online can be used as a mask for sexual offenders and psychos; they can appear to be ordinary normal people, and you have no way of really knowing what is the the truth and what is the lie. Too much personal information is at risk on these social networking sites. You can't really build a relationship with an online friend because on the internet you can become whoever you want to be.
Today Facebook is the second most popular website in the world besides Google. Facebook is a very popular website worldwide. Someone you know or even you may have a Facebook. A lot of individuals fail to see the side of Facebook that is bad. Facebook has explicit images that can cause cyber bullying, which can affect student at school. Many parents don’t want their kids to go through that. Parent thinks sticker rules should be put in place to make it safer. Also they think its ruining kids and think they can keep kids safer by not allowing kids 16 and below to use Facebook but kids are breaking the rules of the age restriction so therefor its not effective. Also many kids set their profiles to public allowing people to see their personal information such as address and phone numbers. The public being able to view kids personal information gives people all the information they need to hurt kids. Often parents help kids create Facebook accounts with knowing that they are breaking the rules because their kids aren’t old enough. Facebook should have an age restriction and sticker rules because it will keep kids safe not only at home but school too.

...ile Steven Pinker believes that social networking is improving society and Sherry Turkle finds it to be harmful to individuals, the real answer lies in-between the two positions. “It is a well-known fact that the web is a valuable asset for research and learning,” stated Sue Scheff in her article “Social Networking Sites Can Limit Interpersonal Skills and Physical Activity,” “…[but] it can also be a very dangerous place” (1). While the Internet is beneficial in gaining knowledge and connecting with others, it will always come with downsides as well because it can become addictive and an easy source for predators and bullies to prey on those who are vulnerable. Ultimately, “it is in our collective interest to ensure that the Internet lives up to its potential as a revolutionary connective medium” (Pariser 11) while being aware of the risks and practicing self-control.

Even though people believe that their social networking profile is private due to their privacy settings, they still need to be careful. Businesses have fired employees and colleges have chosen not to accept students as the result of their social networking profiles.
