The gratifications theory explains why individuals use specific social network platforms for self-satisfaction (Couldry, 2012). The project will examine why students use social media and how they use it in learning, including the implications of such use. This theory helps in explaining the relationship between an individual and the mass media. The central concept here is that people often turn to media to help them fulfill needs that were previously met through in-person social communication. The following are the five distinct categories of needs satisfied by media: cognitive, personal integrative, effective, united integrative, and tension requirements (Couldry, 2012).
Summary and Research Direction
The use of internet and social media among younger generation in college in the last five years has proved to be so intensive. Therefore, the research questions seek to further understand the utility of social sites and their effect on school performance. The highlighted theories are used to help view the usage of social network that may be positive or negative according to different theories. On the positive side, social networks have acted as invaluable tools for students in their academic research and improvement of their academic performances (Madden, Lenhart, Cortesi, Gasser, Duggan, Smith, & Beaton, A 2013). Social networks have been helpful in this area since they have helped many young professionals to seek meaningful opportunities and other ways of enhancing their education and skills.
