“Nothing will medicine thee to that sweet sleep which you owe to yesterday.” This, to me, means that there is no drug you can take or ritual you can do that can make up for the sleep you lost the night before. Sleep is something that occurs for most people every night, and is a time where many important functions of the body occur. If someone thinks that they can make up for lost sleep by drinking coffee or working out or taking a hot shower they are wrong. Sleep is a crucial part of the human’s life cycle.
People need sleep for many reasons. One clear description of why people need sleep can be described by Michael Jouvet’s model of the two types of sleep. Jouvet believes that the first type of sleep is slow wave sleep (which is when delta waves appear on the EEG according to Hans Berger). During slow wave sleep some important things in the body occur. First is the body’s immune response. While you are in this deep sleep, although you may not know it, your body is working to build antibodies and fight diseases.
