Scripture holds a prominent role in the sermon. In 2 Timothy 4:2, it states to “preach the word in season and out of season”. The Greek word for preach is ‘Kerusso’. It means to be a herald (proclaim) and to preach (announce) a message publicly and with conviction (persuasion). In this verse, Paul gave Timothy and the others ministers a charge and a commission to preach the Word. In order to be an effective preacher, the Word of God must be the foundation. In 2 Timothy 3:16, it states that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness”. In other words, the Word of God was written by man, God-breathed and divinely inspired. The Scripture is important because it creates an argument or appeal that is persuading the audience to do something. The substance of our preaching must come from the Bible because the Bible comes from God. As messenger and ambassadors of God, we are obligated to speak the mind and thoughts of God.
The preaching of Scripture serves several purposes. The

Then they must ask God, “what is it Lord that you will have me to say?” They should allow the Holy Spirit to reveal the answer. We should not use Scripture to support out thoughts, our philosophy and our reasoning. As soon as we begin to preach something outside of the Word of God, we lose our authority. In other words, God is no longer in the message and only the words of a man is glorified. This is why we should approach the Word using a childlike attitude. The goal is to glorify God in our preaching. We should allow the sermon to preach to us first before we preach it to the congregation. This means that the sermon needs to be incarnational. In other words our sermons should serves as a mirror. A mirror where we first see our own reflection and make adjustments and then reflect it back to the
“Theology is not superior to the gospel. It exists to aid the preaching of salvation. Its business is to make the essential facts and principles of Christianity so simple and clear…that all who preach or teach the gospel…can draw on its stores and deliver a complete and unclouded Christian message. When the progress of humanity creates new tasks…or new problems…theology must connect these old fundamentals of our faith and make them Christian tasks and problems.” (WR 6)
When looking at the common theme that Barth develops in God Here and Now, it becomes apparent for the need of congregation to justify, ratify, and promote the Bible as the living word of God. When and where the Bible constitutes its own authority and significance, it mediates the very presence of God through the congregation. Encountering this presence in the Church, among those whose lives presume living through the Bible’s power and meaning. Barth states that the Bible must become God's Word and this occurs only when God wills to address us in and through it. The Christ-event is God's definitive self-disclosure, while Scripture and preaching are made to correspond to him as a faithful witness becomes the perfect statement according to Barth (Barth, 2003, p. 61).
The theological issue or topic for further discussion that the work raise is how to get Christian to move from just passively listening to the word to living out the word / applying it to their daily lives. The next issue raised by the work is what are the best ways pastors can encourage their parishioners to read the Word, study the Word, memorize the Word, and meditate on the Word daily. Lastly, I question whether pastors should be encouraged to change their delivery of their sermons from lecture [list of points] to storytelling?
loved us so much that he did that for us so that is the least that we could
You need to not preach your personal theology but preach the theology of the church
A lot of Christians today do not believe that the scripture of the Old Testament has authority. Jesus though, stated many things about the Old Testament. Here are just some examples of what Jesus said about the Old Testament. Jesus taught the Old Testament was a “source of authority”. When Satan confronted Jesus, Jesus used the Old Testament as His foundation for His authority by saying “It is written,” (Matt. 4:4). The Old Testament is unbreakable, “Scripture cannot be broken,” (Jn. 10:35). Jesus used it as His source of Doctrinal Authority. Jesus always referred back to the Old Testament when correcting false doctrine, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God” (Matt. 22:29). He confirmed the truthfulness of the Old Testament, “Your word is truth” (Jn. 17:17). Finally, He taught that the Old Testament was the accepted books in Jewish Scripture. Jesus referred to the entire Old Testament by mentioning all the prophets from Abel, the first martyr to Zechariah, the last martyr (Matt. 23:35).
Faith Samson Period 6 Church Sermons vs. Campaign Speeches “Change. Our scriptures today hold before us a dazzling image of God at work to create new heavens and a new earth, that God is making all things - us included - unimaginably new.” (Meredith Grey) Sermons are very powerful. The preacher gives out deep messages from the word of God. Church sermons and campaign speeches have many similarities. Although, there are many differences between the two subjects. Church sermons and campaign speeches both include silly punch lines to get the audiences’ attention. Preachers don’t want to bored the crowd out, so they become strategic with their jokes. That way the crowd is still following along and at the same time, entertained. Same idea with campaign
It is important for a pastor to know the nature of the situation that he is preaching. Different events, like funerals and weddings, call for a different style of preaching. After this, McDill talks about having an effective presentation. The writer of the book thinks this is best done when a speaker preaches without notes. Right before finishing the book the author deals with the design of the sermon, this is the process of shaping a sermon to fit its purpose.
Some of the most unique and crucial things about the Bible are the inspiration of God, the revelation through it, and the preservation of it. The word inspiration actually means God-breathed. Without God’s words, this would just be like any other book. 2 Timothy 3:16 states “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” (KJV).
Love Yourself as Hearers. Above all, the preachers should consider first the audience or “hearers” when preparing a sermon. As stated in this book, “we need to learn how to introduce, develop, and conclude our subjects in a way that interests hearers” (Galli and Larson, 1994, p. 16). In other words, we need to learn how to modify our words, sentences, paragraphs, stories and illustrations to deliver the message and impact the lives of our audience.
Jesus’ public ministry acts a theological source because of the direct teachings and parables that he speaks about to crowds from
To forsake a God-given gift is not a good idea. God gave his word to the world. From Scripture, his word, comes revelation and understanding of not only who he is, but also who we are in him. Living without the knowledge and wisdom of Scripture would only lead to an unscrupulous and impure life. God gave his word to the world for a reason, and that gift should not be taken lightly. Through it he reveals the desire he has for the lives of his people. Because it is God’s word, Scripture is a guide that his people need to live by.
First and foremost, I will always be focused on the fact that it is my responsibility as a teacher to “cause my students to learn”. I cannot teach my students content unless I have prayed and asked God for illumination and for an “appliers heart”. It is important that I understand the content and application before I teach this to my students which should result in a life change for them. Application is the main reason for God’s revelation and it is my responsibility to share this with my students. My ultimate goal is to illustrate how scripture can be used in daily
