The goal of an education is to gain knowledge to help improve one’s understanding of the world. If we shy away from topics like racism and cultural diversity, then we risk not being able to understand a huge part of the way our world works. Consider this: are all the people we converse with in a day the same ethnicity? Are they all from the same cultural background? If they all are the same ethnicity or from the same cultural background, then one might not need to understand why cultural diversity affects how someone would respond to a problem or situation.
There are many theories from lack of inclusion in society to Imperialist Patriarchy. Whatever the cause the issue needs to be resolved. Toby S. Jenkins (Mr. Nigger), Hooks (We Real Cool Black Men and Masculinity) and T. C. Howard ( Who Really Cares? The Disenfranchisement of African-American Males in PreK-12 Schools) attempt to address the issues that have led to the Black male being an underachiever and what can be done to resolve these issues and put Black men on the same playing field as their counterparts.
Throughout "Ethics of Living Jim Crow" Wright explores the issue of white dominance through Jim Crow laws and how blacks act in response to these discriminatory acts. Through the discrimination and racial violence, whites created a social situation that forced blacks to either accept the inferior role or pay the consequences. He displays the majority of blacks, including his mother, as submissive to whites. They do not dare defy whites and tried to avoid any confrontation with them. While most blacks accept this role, Wright defies it and works to improve his life.
Educating oneself with a culture’s psychology and its norms is significant toward achieving an increasing awareness toward Cultural sensitivity. Furthermore, lack of Cultural sensitivity occurs when people generalize the idea that “we are more the same than different” or that a common culture is shared by all races, religious groups, or ethnic groups. Not p... ... middle of paper ... ...al to have an open mind to be able to gain insight toward learning new information and to gain new perspectives toward the other culture. Every group of people or country has their own issues that can impact its cultural beliefs, values, and attitudes. If a person has not had to face oppression, understanding how to relate to another person can be challenging.
As a final point “Social workers should obtain education” in order to understand cultural diversity and oppression in people (NASW, 2008, p. 9). Cultural Competence Understanding culture is an important aspect of being a social worker; this does not mean learning common cultural traits is of great significance to the social work profession. “Consider the second-generation Japanese-American social worker whose practice consists of Mexican-American and African-American families. Memorizing national traits or cultural rituals would be interesting and informative, but ultimately these would be an inaccurate basis on which to “know” these particular families” (Dorfman, 1996, p. 33). When understanding cultural competence it is important to learn from the client about their culture in order to serve them in the most helpful and efficient way possible.
From this perspective Souza continuously degrade the fact that racism still exist. According to Souza’s view, racism cannot be the blame for most of the contemporary struggles African Americans face. Souza strongly believe that even if racism goes away, African Americans will continue to seek hand outs and make excuses. Such as, kids growing up in single parent households, excessively long predominately black welfare lines, and inner city crimes. Souza goes to the degree of being irrational when he states that he want a repeal of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
The narrator is not the only black male in the story to have experience the racism with the white men. The narrator tries to get away from the racism but struggles to, he come across multiple African Americans that attempt to do the same thing. All of these provide an idea to the correct way to be black in America and it also demonstrates how blacks should act. It is said that anyone who doesn’t follow these correct ways are betraying the race. In the beginning of the story, the narrator’s grandfather says that the only way to make racism become extinct that African Americans should be overly nice to whites.
In the future, the world will only become more diverse. People should learn to appreciate it by acknowledging the differences around them. Sometimes people are scared that “recognizing differences will divide people from each other. However, learning about cultural differences can actually bring people closer together” ( “Section 1”). It would be better if people became closer together instead of growing apart because of discrimination and other mistreatment.
However, these facilities were not equal in anyway. So the African America... ... middle of paper ... ...en have this “destined date with freedom,” at which they can stand alongside their fellow brothers and sisters and be First- Class Citizens and be done with racial discrimination for the whole world. Since the beginning of America till after the Jim Crow era, the African Americans have been humiliated, been considered inferior, and have been denied their basic given rights. However, even with this treatment, the African Americans did not give up or lose hope. They were beaten and imprisoned for their beliefs as shown in the sources above, but they continued to fight for racial integration and to also rise and stand up for themselves and equality.
The first step to bringing social class discrimination to a standstill is by first ensuring one’s beliefs do not label or rub others the wrong way. Therefore, a person should toil to be considerate of others by treating them with respect. Declining to share discriminatory comments masqueraded as humor promotes diversity and fairness. It is exceedingly essential to be vigilant not to upset people from other cltures. Different people interpret words and actions differently.
