Examining Psychopathy from an Attachment Perspective.
Attachment refers to the relationship children have with their parents, how emotionally available the parent is for the child, and if the child is neglected, what that does in terms of child development. “Interactions with parents shape expectations of future interactions and views of self and others in the context of relationships”(Conradi et al, 2016, p.94). Conradi(2017) goes on to state, “A child is securely attached when it has a mental representation of the attachment figure as available and responsive when needed as a source of protection, comfort, or validation”(p.94).

Both scales point to the overall pattern that psychopathy is most prevalent in self-enhancing motivations, most notably ones correlated to experiencing pleasure. Higher psychopathic scores places a great amount of emphasis on values of Power and Hedonism. It’s also worth noting that a very small percentage of scores were associated with psychopathy and the self-enhancing value of Achievement (Glenn et al, 2017). This study helped reshape the public’s preconceived notions about what traits are most associated with psychopathy and helped shed light on underrated traits and motivations that were thought of before as being less significant than other traits. However, most psychopathic behavior stems from one’s upbringing. Did they have an emotionally unavailable parent or guardian? Were they abused physically or emotionally at a young age? Were they ostracised by their friends or family, resulting in manifested anger and aggression when confronted by that same fear later in life? There’s no one or two traits that provide the answer to psychopathy, it is a ‘cocktail’ of psychological variations in perception that result in such imbalance. To group all this information together, I have to start with that raw data collected by the studies.
