Just as scientific fields, such as Biology, are interested in defining and explaining the mechanisms of a certain behavior, many fields of psychology are interested in determining the relationships of interesting related phenomena of this world. In this experiment, one will examine an individual’s amount of sleep and his or her retention of information using the correlational study and experiment research techniques.
A correlational study tests for statistical relationships between variables or events that may have a relationship with one another. In this study, one will look at the statistical relationship between an individual’s amount of sleep and his or her retention of information. As with many scientific techniques, correlational research is not a foolproof method, it has problems of its own, such as the directionality problem and the third-variable problem. The directionality problem denotes the fact that variable M and variable N will be statistically related if M causes N, or if N causes M. The directionality problem is demonstrated in this correlational study as one’s amoun...
