Project management is a complex process. Discuss this statement in the context of the three major variables, which may influence effective project management.
Effective project management is successfully achieving goals through the process of planning and organisation resources. This includes equipment and people, particularly the team members. Project management requires a project manager to manage a team varying in sizes to complete a project which are limited by restraints such as budget schedule and resources (Pinto 2015, p. 47). The three major variables which are discussed in context are top management support, competent leadership and ineffective conflict management. Top management support is crucial for effective management, it is their decision which allows a project to proceed, and further their involvement and support aids in a project being completed successfully. The restraints include but are not limited to budget, schedule and resources. Top management support, leadership and ineffective conflict management were the three variables discussed. Top management support and leadership contribute to making project management effective, whereas ineffective conflict management was a variable which has a reverse effect on successful project management. The importance of top management support was supported by Young and Poon, who argued that top management support is necessary for a project to succeed. Further strong leadership qualities within a project manager ensured that managers retained talent and built a stronger relationship with team members rather than focusing only planning and organising. Finally, conflict management was discussed and how ineffective conflict management can lead to low performances, however it was deemed necessary to solve the problem rather than ignoring
Crawford (2000) suggests that project leadership is the highest ranking category among project management competence factors. Project management leadership style affects overall project performance. Recent research supports the idea that successful projects are led by individuals who possess not only a blend of technical and management knowledge, but also leadership skills that are internally compatible with the motivation of the project team (Slevin and Pinto, 1988; Turner et al., 1998). Zimmerer and Yasin (1998) found that positive leadership contributed almost 76% to the success of projects. Negative or poor leadership contributed 67% to the failure of projects. Project leaders need both, relationships and task oriented leadership styles, to cope with the challenges within different phases of project (Slevin and Pinto, 1991). In projects, project leaders must lead their teams towards completing defined goals with in a fixed time scale. Verma (1997) states “Achieving the goal or final aim is the ultimate test of leadership”. Goals and tasks are achieved through people thus making people an important resource for
What’s the problem at WCBA? Currently, it seems to be a lack of training and leaderships. Ms. Calder is doing a wonderful job building relationships and making the students feel welcome however she is failing at setting the standards on how to run the station effectively. Also, she is spending more times trying to build friendships than training the students and holding them accountable.
Project management is known as the discipline of planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling resources to achieve specific goals. In the diagram to the left in the picture you can see that as a project manager you are the center of either a great accomplishment or a major failure. Some of the major factors to being a successful project manager would be a person that is a great manage several projects or responsibilities and scope issues on an every day basis. “Project teams operate in global environments, and because they do, there are a host of issues that face project managers” (Chapman, 2008, week 1). Project teams are all over the world and face to face interaction is limited. Projects can be conducted via electronics; phone, web conferencing, instant messaging, fax, email and video conferencing. Communication, leadership and direct support from the executives are key factors in running a successful project. Clear roles need to be established by the PM based on individual member skills and understanding of the project goals.
In return, team members must agree to hold each other accountable, as well as embracing conflict and making it work for the team, all the while producing a program plan or design that is within budget (Grigsby, 2008). Several problems associated with HIT projects can be attributed to conflict resulting from the diversity of project team members (Liang, Jiang, Klein, & Yu-Chih, 2010). Each member has different skills and know how, therefore selecting the right people for the job involves looking at their capabilities or desire to contribute and not just in their position in the company. Another potential pitfall is when leadership overlooks the need for a project charter. We covered this in the previous unit and there is no denying the importance of a project charter because it covers the roles and responsibilities of the task force and the other people involved in the project as well as the list of tasks and expected work products (The Results Group, 2009).
In today's business it is in the best interest of companies to have project managers. Common sense isn't always easily accomplished. Anyone who's ever worked on a project in a technical setting knows this. Indeed, much of working with others consists of solving unexpected problems and learning from mistakes along the way. Knowing this and having the proper tools a project manager will be able to manage and complete the most intense project out there.
Project management is said to be completed within time when it completed within the “triple constraints”: cost, time and quality. And in a lot of causes, one them is sacrificed so as to meet the other two. Project managers prioritize which ones are the most important.

According to the relevant literature, it can be discovered that seven sources of conflict uncovered based on research design. The research investigates more than 100 project managers on the opinions of the conflict determinants and put forward seven relevant propositions to verify the accuracy of sources of conflict by the means of Kolmogorov-Smirnov design (Hans et al., 1975). The main sources of conflict can be concluded in the following factors:1 The deviation in the understanding of the project team members related to the project objectives. 2 The discrepancies among project missions, upper management objectives and the role of project team members. 3 Organizational liquidity decreased, the authority continues to control the vital decision despite the actual situation. On the basis of the main factors above, it can be seen that the role of the project manager in conflict management is substantially crucial. Conflict is not as severe as dispute to some extent, therefore, the most important things that project managers should do is to prevent the escalation of conflict from becoming dispute (Fenn, P., 2011). The key role of project managers in conflict situation is not only to create a competitive atmosphere to motivate project members’ higher performance but also evaluate and integrate the gathered information to make crucial decisions. In terms of specific approaches for managing
The role of a project manager has been the subject of numerous publications that have attempted to provide a precise set of qualities and responsibilities for the job title. However, the job role is so encompassing that there are still many different schools of thought on the subject and much debate over the precise terminology to best describe a project manager. This paper analyzes five such publications, and attempts to rationalize their research into a cohesive and comprehensive description of the roles of project manager. This paper establishes the roles of the project manager in the current setting in order that a newcomer to the subject matter will be able to understand the concepts as it relates to modern technology and business practices.
Large or complex projects in big company often require some sort of leadership. In this case, by introducing traditional project management tools are obviously important for project leaders like Kent Black since the methods and tools that project leaders use can be helpful for
Project management involves all activities that encompass scheduling, planning, and controlling projects. A successful project manager ensure that an organization’s resources are being used both efficiently and effectively. Most projects need to be uniquely developed require a sense of customization and the ability to adapt to any posed challenges. The scope of effective project management includes defining what the project is and what is being expected to be accomplished. Projects are imposed to fulfill a certain need and project managers must have the ability to create the proper definition. Goals and the means used to attain those goals have to be clearly stated. Project Managers must also have the ability to plan
When planning a new project, how the project will be managed is one of the most important factors. The importance of a managers will determine the success of the project. The success of the project will be determined by how well it is managed. Project management is referred to as the discipline that entails the processes of carefully planning, organizing, controlling, and motivating the organization resources so as to foster and facilitate the achievement of specific established and desired goals and meet the specific criteria of success required in the organization (Larson, 2014).
