Is our school safe? Do you know what to do if someone falls in gym class and may have a concussion? Have you ever seen someone being bullied? When you’re walking through your school hallways and peek through classrooms, do you see someone on the computer doing inappropriate things on the computer? At home, do you hear about school shootings? When you’re in class and you hear the fire alarm go off, do you know what to do? Those are some of the subtopics that go all into one: School safety. School safety has five areas that our school and most schools lack. Those five areas are: concussion, social and emotional, technology, building, and drill safety. Project Citizen was created to help out different schools that need help in some of these areas that they lack. To be successful in Project Citizen, you MUST: work hard, BE ORGANIZED, work as a team, and research. Our school, Edgewood is one of them. Every year, seventh grade researches a topic. Project Citizen this year is the safety around the school. My opinion on how to improve our current policy at Edgewood is to have any drill once a month just in case one actually happens. We can talk about other schools, but we should just stick to Edgewood.
Edgewood has had many topics for Project Citizen. Project Ci In the past, the students put the effort into helping the community. Edgewood has put in a recycling program, trying to put in hand blow dryers instead of paper towels, and even putting stop signs on busy roads. Edgewood has done two out of the three. We put up a stop sign at a busy crosswalk, and we but in the recycling program. Edgewood is still trying to out in the hand blow dryers. Edgewood has 21 fire alarms, 22/23 fire extinguishers, four AEDs, three first aid kits, five s...

...o do. I think that they should put up a poster because teachers need to know how to handle a concussion. The poster could help the staff members learn how to handle that type of situation. Posters can also capture people’s attention. If the concussion poster captures the student’s attention, then he or she can read the poster and learn how to handle a concussion.
One solution for drill safety is that we need to have more drills to practice. For example we only have 3 fire drills a year. We need to have one fire drill a month so we know what to do when there is a fire. We also need to have more tornado drills. I know that Illinois rarely gets tornadoes, but we still need to practice. We only have three drills a year and we are supposed to have one a month.
In building safety, a solution is that the students could have an ID to show when they walk into the building.
So, the Lake County High School student body was told today by Jimmy Snyder, that we will be having a school shooting drill sometime in the month of November. Therefore, be prepared for it at any given time of the school day. These people know about the upcoming drill: Parents, Staff, Policemen, and the
I am a 17 year old senior in high school and was asked to participate in creating and executing a community service project. My first reaction is to talk to my mother, she is very involved in the community and would have some good ideas. The one that stood out to me was doing a coat drive! Last year we did a small one that ended up providing mostly adult women’s coats. This year an organization that I’ve been a part of for four years, HOSA, is doing a coat drive and I’ve asked if I could piggy back on their project. The person in charge of the coat drive is Bailey Clark, she is the current president of HOSA. HOSA is a great organization that prepares high school students for working in the medical community after graduating.
That’s where the advancements in concussion detection and treatment comes into play. According to the article “Advancements in Concussion Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment” the writer states “the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 207,830 trips to an emergency room annually between 2001 and 2005 due to sports participation injuries” ( “Advancements in Concussion Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment | The Sport Journal” ). The report from the CDC shows how many reported sports injuries occur in a short period. However, this does not include the vast number of injuries not reported every year. That is a lot of injuries that go unreported and not cared for. We can help make it to where all kids after a concussion report it and get treated by educating them on the dangers they face if they continue to play as they are and tell them they will be right back to playing after the testing has been completed and they are clear to play again. This is not hard to do it’s just the fact of telling the kids the truth of the matter and them knowing the tests aren’t hard and don’t take long to pass. But the kids need to know this is needed if they want to be able to play for years to come in school and even in
Keeping plenty of emergency personnel’s on the scene for emergency precautions. This is another great way to keep all players safe. If a player thinks they might have a concussion they should always tell their coach. A player should also be allowed to set out of the game if they think they might have a concussion.
It should be common knowledge on the symptoms of a concussion and what to do to help it heal, especially coaches. Because of the mindset that coaches give towards their players and the spirit of the game, athletes do not report their injuries to their coaches. One reports states, “The culture of sports negatively influences athletes’ self-reporting of concussion symptoms and their adherence to return-to-play guidance” (Waldron). This means that athletes could have any injury, not just a concussion, and they would be afraid to tell the coach because they are afraid of getting taken out of the game. More coaches, however, are starting to come around to educating the team and support staff about head injuries.
A red code is called out when an intruder is in the building. The shooter would hear the code red being announced and know the students are hiding, especially if the shooter is a member of the school, then they know exactly what the procedure is. A barricaded door might deter a shooter, but they will most likely move on to the next class—or they decide that the barricade isn’t going to stop them. In the high school I attend, the vast majority of classroom doors are mostly glass; in theory, a school shooter can shoot right through without even having to enter the classroom. The best way to protect students is to have a more effective defense against threats.
According to the first article, Heads Up: Concussions in High School Sports, "Failure to properly manage concussions may lead to long-term cumulative consequences." Some long lasting effects of a concussion include behavior changes, mood disturbances, and cognitive difficulties. (Concussions: Potential Causes and Long-Term Impacts) New research suggests that people can experience effects for 30 years or longer. Many student athletes are striving to get scholarships for sports, they may want to get back onto the field before it is safe for them to play. They may think that not getting a scholarship to their dream school is disappointing, but for the health and well-being of the student athlete, it is better for them to be cleared by a medical
In light of recent acts of violence in the nation’s schools, school safety and security have become a hot topic. However, the issue of school safety goes beyond student violence. It includes property damage, theft, and anything else that concerns the overall well being of schools. While it is important to create a safe environment in schools it is also necessary to make sure students feel comfortable in this atmosphere. The security can not be so overbearing that it becomes a negative tactic that gets in the way of the students main objective, learning. Barely noticeable cameras, ID cards, and security guards without uniforms can help generate this safe, but comfortable learning environment. On the other hand metal detectors and mini police forces may be a little too reminiscent of George Orwell’s novel, 1984, or even modern prisons. School security should not be overbearing or obtrusive where it gets in the way of a comfortable environment that is conducive to learning in the nation’s schools.
Its hard to believe that there isn’t enough money out there to increase school safety, but there is enough money that the government is able to cut down on taxes. Tax payers pay for campaigns, but why doesn’t our taxes go off to help make schools safer for our children? Students should not be afraid to attend school. School should be a safe environment where teenagers can be teenagers and not feel intimidated. CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey, is a school-based survey designed to produce a sample of risk behaviors of students ages 9-12.
As the ambulances arrive to the 3rd quarter of a high school football game the paramedics pull a young teenage boy with curly blonde hair away. The mother cries frantically as she enters the ambulances seat while the rest of the young players take a knee for the all-star quarterback number 42. Surprisingly an alarming amount of teenagers as wells as adults such as parents do not know that concussions in high school athletes are higher than in older athletes. Sadly high school students still participate in the sports and games because they are unaware that they have been injured, creating numerous problems that can lead to you being taken to the hospital or even possible death. Not having concussions checked out or treated can lead to permanent
With our schools variety of sports and activities, it comes with a variety of injuries. One of the most common of these injuries, is a concussion. I feel that how we are currently handling students with concussions can be improved. The students diagnoses of their concussions should be more closely examined, and we can improve a students healing process in school.
School shootings are preventable. In the months since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT there have been thirty-six school shooting incidents. These represent a clear threat to the nation. Safe schools are imperative for a functioning, thriving democracy. These incidents can be prevented, they are not the inevitable by-products of a free society. Reasonable laws, education, and experienced counselors and educators are key.
...cts are unknown. Preliminary data indicates the Youth Advisory Council model, one example of the community problem-solving approach, may be a promising avenue for engaging young people. Additional longitudinal research in coming years will be crucial in developing more definitive conclusions. Anecdotally, many students find great value in the program, indicating it develops leadership skills and provides motivation for further community participation. The participants are not the only beneficiaries, however. Through thorough planning and thoughtful implementation, the sponsoring agency and broader community gain significantly from such a process. Involving young people in addressing community problems at the local level can infuse new life into agencies and communities, while helping to prepare young people to become active, engaged citizens in our democracy.
The issue of school safety has become a controversial topic in the United States, due to tragic acts of violence occurring on a daily basis. American citizens should never have to cope with the negative impact of school violence, no matter how often they hear about the tragedies (Jones, "Parents" 1). In the past, schools were viewed as a safe place for children to get an education. Recently, the concern over violence in schools has taken a toll on many parents, school administrators, and legislatures (Eckland 1). Studies have shown that there are over 3 million acts of violence in American public schools each year. Not all occurrences are serious and deadly, but they occur on a daily basis throughout our country (Jones, “School” 6). This has caused many parents to worry about the well-being of their children while they are in class. This has also led to an increase in questions and concerns by parents and guardians. Many people have asked, “What are you doing about safety and security on my child’s campus” (Schimke 2). School violence is the cause of elevated worry and fear for their children, and school districts should enforce better security.
Project Citizen is a project that seventh-graders do annually. The students take one problem and find a way to solve it. The goals of Project Citizen are straightforward. There are four steps to Project Citizen. First, the students need to identify a problem in the school or community. Then, they research that problem. The students need to finish about twenty tasks, each related to a category of school safety. Next, they evaluate possible solutions to that problem. The solutions are put into a research paper, which is what this paper is. After that, they develop public policy ideas. These are put into a group presentation and later presented to a larger audience. The four keys to being successful in Project Citizen are to work hard, work as a team, research well, and stay organized.
