The physical therapy profession in most recent years has experienced an identity transformation. Anybody enduring an identity change typically suffers a selfhood crisis, characterized by role confusion, conflicting expectations, and lack of direction. Although these kind of words sound sort of gloomy there are great positive advantages of having identity “revisions” in our lives and in our professions. An article in Psychology Today (Krauss, 2012) points out that exploring our identity, forces us to think seriously about the issues we confront and the path we want to embark. Physical Therapists are at a stage in their careers (despite of how long they have been PT’s) with serious decisions to make. Do they want to remain doing what was done …show more content…
I am actually discussing those cases with them since we are learning together! I have encouraged them to initiate this practice with our main referral sources because there is an already established baseline standard of communication and mutual professional respectful relationship with them. These are MD’s willing to hear what we have to say plus they have openly recognized physical therapy is outside of their scope of practice. In two (2) cases, when the imaging testing results were obtained, the MD’s shared the reports AND the films with the PT for her to “view” the results. I was able to see them too and better understand what the reports actually meant. Some of our therapists have accompanied the patient to the appointment to collaborate with the MD’s face to face. I am aware this model may not be possible for all, but in our case has helped fostering those conversations. Our two newest PT’s (with doctorate degrees) have started to discuss imaging findings with the patients/families as a clinical resource …show more content…
The potential solution is to continue working with our primary referral sources increasing our professional reputation with them in this area. The hope is that word of mouth communication (physicians passing the information to other physicians) will expand their interest to collaborate with us. Typical physician concerns about direct access and expanded physical therapist involvement in additional fields include but are not limited to service overutilization, increased costs, and inappropriate care. A research report in APTA (Mitchell and de Lissovoy, 1997) supported that direct access episodes are typically short in duration and more cost effective making the MD’s concerns unwarranted. If physicians are onboard with this concept, we would have greater opportunities for the medical insurances to embrace physical therapists participation in the imaging technique
During the interview, the Physical Therapist I conferred with was very thorough and straightforward in his responses to the questions that were given. I decided to interview another one of my mother’s fellow co-workers, Mr. Stephen Chan, considering his new experiences in the Physical Therapy field. I met with Mr. Stephen Chan at the Kaiser Permanente Outpatient Orthopedic Clinic that is located in Union City. The essential subject matters that we discussed consisted of his Major and Minor in college, the Residency Program that he takes part in, variations of attitudes, and advantages in the workforce.
There are several tests and measure that can be done in a physical therapy examination in order to rule out certain diagnoses, as well as come closer to a physical therapy diagnosis. First, an observation of the patient standing, walking, and sitting should be done in order to associate any visible deficits in the patient that could be associated to the ...
People who have been in accidents or having disabling conditions turn to physical therapists, commonly called PT’s, for help. Physical therapists are professional health care providers who are licensed in each and every state they practice. Physical therapy has a long history of returning people to their maximum level of physical function. Physical therapists use a variety of techniques to restore a function, improve mobility, relieve pain and prevent physical disabilities in their patients. However, being a physical therapist also has many downfalls such as dealing with patient’s insurance, motivating patients, and dealing with criticism in the workplace.
As for some patients, the biggest concern about attending physical therapy is cost. So, has the therapist had a conversation with each patient about financials? Does the patient understand their insurance and how much each visit will be? What will their insurance cover? Is the PT aware that maybe the patient cannot afford to come in three times a week? Maybe the patient requested to come in once a week instead? Is there a plan as to what the patient could do something outside of therapy, to help decrease their symptoms and number of visits? All of which are important questions to further understand if the situation is ethically or morally
The occupation that I would like to research is Physical Therapy. I personally chose Physical Therapy because I have experienced it myself and I believe I would enjoy doing this for the rest of my life. Physical Therapy is in Health Sciences cluster. In the Health Sciences field Physical Therapy falls under Therapeutic Services and Health Informatics. When I did my Nebraska Career Connections interests test I scored the highest in Therapeutic Services. I then filled out a skills inventory and it ranked number four on that assessment. Considering I scored highly in both occupations means that this occupation is good for me as of right now.
“Where am I? How did I get here?” is what many stroke patients say after recovering from an acute or severe stroke. A stroke is also known as a cerebrovascular accident, a life-threatening event where the brain is deprived of adequate oxygen. A physical therapist’s duty is to provide assistance and education that will help patients rehabilitate and return to a normal routine. As of today, there is a new treatment called treadmill training with partial body weight support that facilitates recovery of a patient’s ability to walk sooner after a surgery. Is the expense for treadmill training with partial body weight support which includes expensive equipment and constant physical therapy supervision worth it if it decrease the amount of time it takes a person to get better? Is it ultimately more efficient than traditional physical therapy? My argument will state that treadmill training with partial body weight support is worth the expense and provides better techniques than traditional physical therapy.

Physical therapy is always full of surprises, from new advancements in technology to new and improved therapeutic techniques. Although there are fun games and new technology that physical therapists can do with patients, the main struggle for physical therapists is to motivate their patients to complete their therapy exercises both in the clinic and in the outside world. This problem is very frustrating because the doctors who work at the clinic constantly push patients to complete their therapy so that they can heal; however, when patients are stubborn and reluctant to their treatment, yet constantly complain of pain, doctors must spend more time convincing them to do the therapy rather than completing the therapy itself.
From a young age I was interested in the medical field. As I became more exposed to the various options, I decided physical therapy was the right career for me. My experience has proved the field to be interesting and fun. I enjoy working with people and the versatility of therapy. There are many areas to specialize in and I look forward to learning which one is right for me. At the moment I am interested in pediatric acute care but I am also interested in sports and orthopedics. As I continue my studies, I look forward to learning about the different fields in which physical therapy will take me. My future views may change which physical therapy field I wish to pursue, but right now I look forward to learning as much as I can about physical therapy and helping others.
Physical therapy is the most exciting healthcare profession. Being able to wake up every morning to help other people who have problems with their body is amazing. Some of the treatments are electrical stimulation, hot and cold packs, infrared and ultrasound to reduce swelling or relieve pain. These treatments are used to help decrease pain and increase movement and function. Therapeutic exercises instructions will help restore strength, movement, balance, or skill as a guide towards full functional recovery. Physical therapy provides "hands on techniques" like massage or joint mobilizations skills to restore joint motion or increase soft tissue flexibility. They will focus on basic skills such as getting out of bed, walking safely with crutches or a walker, moving specific joints and muscles of the body. Physical therapists treatment includes patient education to teach them how to deal with a current problem and how to prevent the problem in the future. Such documentation is used to track the patient's progress, and identify areas requiring more or less attention. They encourage patients to use their own muscles. Their main goal is to improve how an individual functions at work and home.
Physical therapists are health care professionals that provide therapeutic services to their patients who have temporary or chronic physical conditions that were caused from injury or disease. Physical therapist also provided therapeutic services to patients after they have gone through surgery to help them gain back mobility and manage their pain. They can also work in preventive care by promoting healthy life styles and instructing individual patients or groups on preventing injury by using exercises that stretch and strengthen muscles. To help their patients try to recover they use massage techniques, wellness plans, and different types of equipment. When a physical therapist sees a patient for the very first time they must do an examination, evaluation, diagnosis, and then put together a physical intervention to start the rehabilitation process. They also work as a team with other health care professionals to help with their patients needs.
