It is time to put the physical back into education. If the objective is to educate our students, shouldn’t the courses help maximize knowledge intake? Exercise is a great method to enhance brain cells and function, therefore the physical education courses must make a rally to truly maximize the student's’ potential. “Physical activity increases production of neurotransmitters that support learning readiness; oxygen flow, which facilitates healthy brain functioning, and the brain chemical BDNF, which enhances creation of neurons and synapses”(Conyers, 2015, p.68). Critics believe that a Physical Education class is unnecessary, leading to a decreasing interest and investment towards the subject. Injuries happen to people even when not engaged in physical activates, and the bullying should be something that must not be tolerated by the instructor. Physical Education must not be overlooked anymore. Obesity is increasing at an alarming rate amongst children and this course may serve as a tool towards countering the problem. “Our current fear that childhood obesity is at epidemic levels in the United States can obscure the fact that childhood obesity has a history in America and a long and varied one at that”(Dawes, 2014). The course benefits students in many ways, raising awareness and hopefully action towards making Physical Education a core subject once more.
Physical Education is imperative, therefore the school system must display emphasis on the subject. Lack of exercise may negatively affect the structure of our brains, as well as increase our vulnerability to stress and our risk of poor heart health. “Based on the analysis of our survey results, we can state that the respondents are aware of the importance of physical activity for health, and as they state, the impact of physical activity is manifested mainly in improving their fitness, muscle strengthening and body shaping”(Novotná, 2016, p. 233). A lack of physical activity may lead to an increase in blood pressure as well as contribute to the development of heart disease. “Regular physical activity has been shown to improve the functional status and quality of life of older adults”(Healy, 2013). According to a recent study published in The Journal of Comparative Neurology, it suggests that inactivity can change the structure of our brains, just as activity does. So get up off that couch and move around. It's essential for your health. Opinions might suggest that healthy eating habits will suffice for a lack of exercise, unfortunately the brain is like every muscle in the body. “A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases”(Kohl, 2013).
