The logic behind eliminating physical education or gym class seems simple, school kids will get fatter. That’s not the case, according to healthland.time.com, “One in three U.S. kids is overweight or obese, but only six states – Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, Illinois, and Iowa.”, Even with physical education, kids are still obese or overweight. Obesity and being overweight isn’t the only problem that children in America face but it’s the biggest issue among children’s health. Students may have physical education class throughout their school day, but they may not be meeting the appropriate time they need to be active during the school week. Guidelines issued by the American Heart Association and the Society of Health and Physical Educators state that school’s should have 150 minutes a week of physical activity in elementary schools, and 225 minutes of physical activity in middle and high school. According to healthland.time.com, only 4% of the U.S. follow the guidelines issued, 29% of the U.S. were considered “weak” in their guidelines, and 67% of the U.S. school districts had no physical education policies. The lack or quality of physical education among schools in the United States is a problem. Many problems with school student’s health are on the rise, such as, heart …show more content…
Physical education was a big part of my life, it made me find myself, athletically, it made me look forward to something every day at school, I made friends, learned a lot about my body and how to live a healthy lifestyle. I don’t know how people could try to take that away from students, for all the students that don’t like physical education, there’s just as many students that love it and look forward to it, as much as I
other hand, obesity accounts for about 13 percent of children in the United States, which is why physical education programs should be one of the last things to go. They also help students release the stress they have built up through out the day and teach them the ...
... schools must start to offer more extra curricular activities. This is an issue which both Australia and England have left off their physical education. There could never be a case for making extra-curricular activities compulsory for children but it could be added to the curriculum and state that schools most give the option of after school activity. Regular curriculum checks need to be done to make sure schools are following the curriculum.
Schools serve as an amazing venue to provide students with everyday physical movement, and to instruct the essentialness of general physical action for wellbeing. Shockingly, most individuals' get little to no general physical activity while in school. Budgetary obligations and the pressure to increase test scores have brought on school authorities to address the worth of PE and other physical activity programs. This has prompted a significant lessening in the time accessible for PE, and in a few cases, school-based physical action projects have been totally eliminated.
An Investigation into Primary School Physical Education This report will provide a concise investigation into the developmental stages of physical education. Whilst this assignment will provide an overview of the subject in primary schools at present, it will also go on to investigate into the issue of teaching on a practical basis and also look at how physical education can develop a child. Using the information gathered from primary and secondary research, which was conducted whilst attending a primary school as a six week work placement, the latter stages will provide some critique and offer some recommendations to how physical education can be improved or developed in the future. After experiencing physical education at all academic levels, I was very interested in researching into the primary stages of the subject as I understand it to be the most valuable period of learning for any child. This belief is reinforced by the quote that ‘it is widely accepted that the younger the child, the more they learn through physical activity’ (P.Wetton, 1988).
Being in a sport helps maintain activity levels high for most students. Being fit prevents kids from getting heart disease. In the article "What in the name of football?" by Hank Hill, the article states that " The single greatest factor in preventing the nation's number one killer -heart disease- is regular vigorous exercise." That get's my vote. What this part of the article is telling me is that kids who exercise are less likely to suffer from heart disease. If we so happen to remove sports from the school, the kids would have a greater risk of suffering a heart
Physical education is something that every individual needs in order to be healthy. Obesity has become a major conflict in the world today and teaching children how to be healthy could prevent them from such a future. Most households get dinner from fast food places. This kind of food without a proper amount of exercise leads to a lot of problems. An improper diet also leads to heart and other health problems that might not appear until an older age. Another big problem that an increase of gym classes could help improve is children learning social skills. Getting kids into sports can help them learn the importance of socializing. Colleges and work places search for students who have positive social skills. Knowing how to socialize with other people is what people need to have a healthy lifestyle. These factors are very important conflicts that need to ...
With childhood obesity becoming an epidemic in America, we need methods to help stop obesity in children such as physical activities. Physical activities are not only to help prevent obesity; it can also help students improve on their academics. “Physical education helps the brain function; exercise increases the blood flow within the body and increases the blood volume in regions of the brain associated with memory formation” (Kovar, Susan K at el. Elementary Classroom Teachers as Movement Educators. 4th ed. Boston: McGraw-Hill, 2004. Print.). Children spend many hours of their week inside a classroom, there are activities and lessons teachers can do to help their students become more active. “Physical education and movement are important to start at a young age because children are very active and child obesity is a huge problem these days” (Gaither, Laura, personal interview. October 7, 2013). Having movement and physical activity in the classroom is crucial to elementary school children as it is shown to have a positive effect on their overall life quality. “We know that physical activity is critical…not just for better health but for better academic performance” (Michelle Obama).
Recently there has been controversy about the topic of physical education being compulsory throughout all years of schooling. The main benefits that will be focused on will be academic performances, physical education helping depression and benefiting one’s health. The main concerns of whether physical education is beneficial to being mandatory in schools will also be discussed including; time-wasting and ineffective while reducing one’s interest in sport.
Physical education exists in schools to help students perform physical activity in schools and promote healthy lifestyles. It is extremely important that physical education teachers promote physical activity and healthy diets to young students because they are the ones who will be at risk of developing health issues such as obesity. Physical educators need to teach the younger generation the proper way to stay healthy so that they will continue to be physically active outside of phys...
Over the past decades our culture has changes dramatically. To which our nation was once a physically active nation. Yet now it seems that society discourages physical activity. The human race has been dependent on automobiles, discouraging people to walk or bike, increasing the chance of a poor life-style. Yet there are many factors that affect the achievement and maintenance of a healthy life. Young people are growing into a diverse society, which is characterized by rapid change, inactive work and leisure practices that influence unhealthy behaviors. By incorporating physical activity into peoples daily routine will increase their chances of being healthier, reducing certain diseases and learning how to avoid injuries. Physical education helps students improve their knowledge about health issues and practices that will lead to a more enjoyable life. Students playing and working in a team together develop social skills, teamwork, achieving goals, and development of self-esteem. Overall physical education provides the potential for a better life style.
Physical education in school systems is beneficial because it improves students’ health. Without physical education the child’s overall health will decrease. Despite these benefits, some people believe that physical education has no value to children in schools. Physical education is significant in schools because it improves children’s health.

Physical education is an important area in schools today. If taught correctly, it can develop physical and mental skills as well as develop a sense of self. By participating in physical activity, a student’s skill will naturally increase to the demands placed upon it. If a student never tries then their skill will never grow. The mental skills one develops in a physical education class are proble...
...e all need physical activity to become and remain healthy, and that physical activity will have a positive outcome on our life regardless of differences. I will ensure that all students become aware and accepting of others and differences because we all are different in our own ways. My students will learn to help those who cant help themselves and support those who are in need.
In conclusion, the time students spend in a physical education class should not be reduced or eliminated altogether. As I have discussed, the physical education course is just as necessary as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Everyone deserves a chance to live a healthy and long life and education is the key to this success.
