Most people, when looking at things like personality tests and horoscopes, and other conclusive assesments, tend to try and make sense of the response by relating what the personality test says to specific aspects about themselves. When I got my results back from the personality quiz, I was anything but surprised, if anything, the quiz just confirmed how indecisive I can be and how mixed my personality can be. In every single category, I had moderate results, never expressing too much of a lean in either direction. Perhaps the most accurate description of myself, offered by the quiz, in regards to being extroverted or introverted. Sure, personality tests can be a fun thing to do when bored or if you just want to learn a little bit about yourself, but they should never be used as a deciding factor in life changing decisions. When looking specifically at the MBTI, some actually see it as nothing more than a tool feeding into business culture and making money (citaotion, 1232). Something like the MBTI should never be used in determining one’s future because one test designed solely to make money, is simply incapable of telling you what you should do. Most personality tests like this are actually against the American Psychologist Association ethics code that is outlined on their website (American Psychological Association, 2010). The code specifies that those that are administering such assessments must clearly convey the limitations of the conclusions the assessment makes about you. Without these warnings provided, many people probably hold the results at a much greater importance than they really are. Furthermore, I think that the entire idea of matching careers, colleges, or decisions with your personalities holds very little value. Although it is important for a person to be able to adapt to the needs of their job, there is not a specific “personality mold” that one has to fit into in order to pursue their dream career.
