Why Are We Not Paying Our Athletes?

Playing sports in college is really hard, college athletes work hard every day so they can win and go to a professional level and some of them don’t even make it, either they don’t have enough money for school supplies and failing classes or if they get a really bad injury that ends their career before even start it. College athletes school should get paid because they spend most of their time working hard, and bring in a lot of money each game they play, but they don’t even receive a penny out of the hard work and the money they help bring in. This change would definitely promote college athletes to also stay in college longer and completely get their full education that fact. The goals of the NCAA should be for these athletes to get the full education. If college athletes get paid, they are most likely going to stay in college to get a full education and go to a professional level (Peeble). If college athletes get paid it will not just make them stay in school, but also motivate them to bring their grades up. The collegiate athletic system desperately demands reforms. Young men and women are putting in so hours work weeks, on top of classes, and all they have to show for it is NCAA president Mark Emmert’s $ 1.7 million dollar salary. If I want to play college basketball, i would have no choice but to seek athletic employment from the NCAA (not to mention grow 8 inches and develop a sweet jump hook) this effectively allows the NCAA to set the price they are willing to pay for the labor of college athletes which is currently 0 dollar. How can the NCAA get away with profiting from merchandise, ticket sales, advertising, and endorsement while the players don’t receive a penny in salary or stipend from the organization ?. NCAA is taking advantage of the money the players bring in every game without reward them (Gorwitz). NCAA wouldn’t get that much money if they didn’t have the players or the players didn’t put the work in, any effort or excitement in the game and plus they are not guaranteed to go to the professional level. How can NCAA get so much money and the players who make it happen don’t get a penny out of it, they are taking advantage of the players hard work.
