There is little I’d rather discuss than the importance of our educators and the impact of their work. I am especially thankful for the men and women across the country, and globally, that have dedicated their life’s craft to being intellectual guardians, protectors, and promoters of the knowledge that makes human life especially unique. Despite the never ending despair that December often evokes, as finals drown students and teachers alike in never ending stacks of paper, it is important to remember the unique opportunities that the classroom setting has to offer. Another attribute I think is necessary for success is moral insight and character, leading by example and feeling open enough to share learning experiences with students can go so extremely far in developing a learning relationship between student and teacher. The impact that these relationships invite and encourage can be especially unique and rewarding for all parties involved. On the other hand, a classroom in which a teacher is noticeably less engaged, the outcome for many can be negative. Learning is a process that can be frustrating and overwhelming for students even when the best teachers are there for support, without this support the classroom experience can be miserable for all involved. As an elementary and middle school student I always naturally evaluated the styles and characteristics of the many teachers I was able to encounter. Like any consumer I was simply getting a feel for the quality of my experience. In massively under-funded schools that did at times lack air conditioning or functional electricity, the impact of many dedicated educators was the driving force that held me accountable for my own dedication, even if this sense of dedication was just being applied to cut and glue worksheets or cup stacking races in P.E. As an educator, I understand that negative impact of not having a highly qualified teacher in every classroom. In the last decade, people have decided not to study education and many educators have left field. Therefore, I believe it is of the upmost importance to identify future educators at an early age. Moreover, this project will have a positive impact on students at Jefferson County High School. As a life-long learner, I believe it is crucial that I set the example for my students. It is my desire to make this a great experience for them and to learn new things as we matriculate through the program.
Ever since I started talking this class, English 1301, with Dr. Piercy, I have been able to expand my writing and thinking skills. Not only was I able to make more better essays but I also learned important topics such as how education creates an impact in the world. In this essay I will be talking about three writings and how they are related to this course semester. The three writings are “On Bullshit” by Harry Frankfurt, “Why I Write Bad” by Milo Beckman,and “Statement of Teaching Philosophy” by Stephen Booth. How are these 3 writings related to this semester’s course work?
One aspect I believe all schools should have is the element of safety at school. A student cannot efficiently learn without first feeling safe. In Joan Lipsitz and Teri West’s What Makes a Good School? they say, “In high-performing schools, the adults work together to provide a web of emotional and social support for the students, not just in the services the school provides but in the attitudes and relationships the adults establish with students” (Lipsitz & West, 2006 p. 83). Schools should not only provide services such as counseling, or food to take home to support their mental and physical safety, but ensure that the teachers employed at the school are making meaningful relationships with the students so they feel safe within the classroom. Another common theme seemed to be the idea of teachers working together, which I think is a great idea as someone who is a future teacher. In the article Piece by Piece: How Schools Solved the Achievement Puzzle and Soared, Karin Chenoweth states, “The point of teacher collaboration is to improve instruction for students and to ensure that all students learn” (Chenoweth, 2009 p. 116). Other than all the schooling that teachers receive a major way of how they learn to teach is through their own experience. Sharing experiences with other teachers can help to modify lessons, or to share out ideas that will better prepare a teacher for their own class. Over the course of this class I feel like I have become a much better writer. When I go back and look at some of my Journal entries and assignments that I did at the beginning of the semester, I can’t help but tense up at some of the things I wrote. Sometimes the things I was writing didn’t flow well, or I might have even have missed glaring grammar mistakes.
Growing up in a predominantly white neighborhood as a kid sanctioned me to perpetually become aware that I was different from my neighbors. Through some social interactions with my friends in elementary schools, I quickly descried that my appearances, such as my hair, eyes, and nose was different from my peers. The topic of what happens to those that have, "never heard the good news of Jesus Christ" weighs extremely heavy on my heart. I work with Atheist, Muslim, Hindu and Pluralist in the technology field. Frequently I am attacked just for being a Christian. For a while it was scary to know that I have become a minority in my own country. Some how each time I am attacked I love these guys that much more. My Hindu friend really knew nothing about Jesus before he met me. At lunch one day he asked me about Christianity and I was able to share with him the good news. But for some reason he rebeled and believes the Bible is, "the greatest book of fiction ever created." If not for the revelation God provided about His Word in my second year of Bible school, I probably would be a pluralist myself. Mrs.Toliver exemplified three vital skills that make a great teacher. Mrs.Toliver had good classroom management skills, designed her lessons to encourage student mastery of the subject, and had high expectation of her students’ successful academic outcome.
In chapter two of Ryan Cooper’s textbook, Those Who Can, Teach, he lists eight characteristics of an effective school: “[1] high expectations for student performance, [2] communication among teachers, [3] a task orientation among the staff, [4] the ability to keep students on task, [5] the expenditure of little time on behavior management, [6] the principal’s instructional leadership, [7] the participation of parents, and [8] the school environment” (51). While all eight characteristics above greatly contribute to a school’s overall success, some characteristics have a greater ability to affect the success of a given school. Educators Wong and Wong point out that research consistently says effective teachers exhibit three characteristics: 1) they are good classroom managers, 2) they teach for learning and mastery, and 3) they have positive expectations (8-10). Because I believe the foundation of school effectiveness relies on teachers, I consider the characteristics with a focus on effective teacher-to-student interaction most important. Taken from the list above, those characteristics are (1) teachers who exhibit high expectations for student performance, (3) a task orientation among the teaching staff, and (4) the ability to keep students on task.
The children seek an educational atmosphere that they feel secure, happy, and an environment that will not just educate them, but stimulate how they will grow and mature into upstanding citizens of our communities. I feel it is important that I give each child the proper resources to be successful. By providing a learning environment that will build their imagination to use critical thinking, be open to their questions and curiosity, and the most important is being a positive role model they can look up to not just for that year, but for years to come. I was very fortunate to have a teacher Mr. Rae that impacted my life when I was in elementary, middle, and in high school. He was an exemplary teacher that went above and beyond the normal realm of teaching.
An effective teacher will excite, inspire and motivate students to be active in their learning, investigate new areas of knowledge and make connections to future learning (Whitton et al 2010). When a teacher is successful, their students are motivated, mutually respectful and ready to build on their knowledge and solve real-world problems. To be a teacher of value, one must have many skills and qualities to cater for a diversity of learners and their individual development; this includes many personal traits that are noticed students.
Our nation’s education system strives through the hard work and dedication of its educators. Often great teachers, principles and supporting staff are drawn to the profession because they possess the desire to empower, inspire, nurture and watch young people grow - not only academically, but also emotionally. These people are there because they want to make an impact upon our society and the lives of whom the reach. Highly effective teachers are those who have taken learning to new heights by accelerating student learning, closing achievement gaps that persisted for decades, and promoting a mindset of change. Moreover, the presence of highly effective teachers in classrooms today continues to manifest as a result of the support from strong school leaders (U.S. Department of Education, 2013).
