The news media or news industry are forms of mass media that focus on delivering news to the general public or a target public. These include print media (newspapers, newsmagazines) broadcast news (radio and television), and more recently the Internet (online newspapers, news blogs, etc.). By covering news, politics, weather, sports, entertainment, and vital events, the daily media shape the dominant cultural, social and political picture of society. Beyond the media networks, independent news sources have evolved to report on events which escape attention or underlie the major stories. In recent years, the blogosphere has taken reporting a step further, mining down to the experiences and perceptions of individual citizens. An exponentially …show more content…
The symbolic function of terrorism occurs when a terrorist act induces an audience to search for motives and meanings to explain and interpret the act for example, when an audience first learns of a bomb exploded in a super market or on an airliner the audience wants to know who planted the bomb and why. Media should be prevented from making public certain information, such as military movements or policy options because that might be useful to terrorists. Media is useful to terrorist since it encourages them by publicizing claims of responsibility, talking their words without questions and, publicizing their images. The kidnapping or killing of an American on foreign soil is not worthy to be covered by national news nor local news, because news, because new coverage will make such an incident more bigger and will help the terrorists to be a national talk. The killing of any American person in any Arab country will be big story for the news to talk about, so if American terrorist are killed in Beirut. Even though they are terrorists this will be a disaster since Beirut is an Arab country white killing of American during a robbery in Paris will pass the distinguished guest passage since Paris is not an Arab
News is the communication of selected information on current events. It is shared in various ways: among individuals and small groups; with wider audiences; or in ways that blend those traits. Before modern technology came to help news to be broadcasted worldwide, even before the printing press started to produce newspapers, it was disseminated by town criers. People would have not known what is happening.
New technology has fuelled the expansion with the growth of phone apps, social media formats, smartphones able to capture video and upload instantly onto the web. The public is now recording, documenting, sharing and viewing events as they happen, often before professional journalist or reporters. Technology allows people to view major events in real time anywhere in the world, creating a ‘global village’ in which everyone is connected (McLuhan 1964; cited in Giddens 2013). However, the mass medias of television, radio and newspapers both in print and online, continue to be the mediums the public accesses the news and events on a local, national and international
The attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, and the second attack in 2001 are the cases of terrorism that I have chosen to focus on because I believe that they are extremely significant. Both attacks happened during my lifetime, which makes them more personal, and also happened in the city where I was born. Both of these attacks are examples of terrorism because both attacks were violent and intimidating crimes that also had political motives. At first glance, both events seem very similar since they shared a target. In addition, in both cases the terrorists had planned to hit other targets as well, that ended up not being affected or taken down as planned. Also, as stated by Cline, “Both were conducted and planned by men of Middle Eastern descent intent on revenge against the U.S. and Israel's military action in the region” (Cline, 2013). Despite the fact that both cases share many similarities, they also have many differences. The first bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993 was less devastating that the attacks on September 11th, 2001. In the first attack, fewer people died and the plan was not as successful as the second attack. In addition, the first attacked used a car with a bomb, whereas the second attack used hijacked planes. Although people remember 9/11 for the attack on the twin towers, other important buildings were hit as well, whereas in 1993 the only target that was hit successfully was the North Tower of the World Trade Center. As stated by Scanlon, “the ability of terrorists to create an event which catches the media’s complete attention indicates another significant role the media play in disasters” (Scanlon, 2009). Therefore, the media plays a crucial role in terrorism because without the media, terro...

In “Reporting the News” by George C. Edwards III, Martin P. Wattenberg, and Robert L. Lineberry, the main idea is how the media determines what to air, where to get said stories that will air, how the media presents the news, and the medias effect on the general public. “Reporting The News” is a very strong and detailed article. The authors’ purpose is to inform the readers of what goes on in the news media. This can be inferred by the authors’ tone. The authors’ overall tone is critical of the topics that are covered. The tone can be determined by the authors’ strong use of transitions, specific examples, and phrases or words that indicate analysis. To summarize, first, the authors’ indicate that the media chooses its stories that will air
“The media is the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that is power because they control the minds of the masses.” (Malcolm X). One of the most controversial matters that was on local and international TV news, radio stations, newspapers, magazines and social media sites is the Boston Marathon Bombings which occurred in April 15th last year. There were many opinions about who committed that massacre. Many media outlets were with the thought that the whole crime was staged on the other hand some of them were quick to point the finger at Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his brother Dzhokhar . In this paper I have chosen to put the light on three of the famous media resources which are: the Boston Fox 25 News TV, CNN TV and Press TV (Iranian).
For years, the population has been exposed to different forms of media. Newspapers, magazines, television, films, radio, and more recently the Internet are ways of promoting ideas, spreading news, and advertising products.
My main criticisms of the news media today are that they do not show both sides of the story, they tend to cover items that should not be news. The things they do well is that they keep you informed on topic they deem fit, and of course the weather and traffic updates.
In recent years, the word “Media” has become a controversial subject due to the reputation that has been formed surrounding it. When defined, “Media” can refer to any form of mass communication, designed to convey information around the globe. However, due to the influential nature of broadcasting, large corporations such as the American broadcasting Corporation (ABC) manipulate reality in order to convey a specific ideology. Under certain circumstances, mass-manipulation of such information can vastly impact the perception of the public on issues such as insurgency in the Middle East. An example of this effect is the aftermath of 9/11, the monumental act of aggression and revolt that took place on the morning of September 11th 2001 in New York City, NY. At 9:03 am United Flight 175, a Boeing 757, was flown into the South Tower of the World Trade Center. The aircraft entered the south face at floors 77-85, controlled by several men of Middle Eastern ethnicity (Federal Bureau of Investigation). In the wake of tragedy, the gap between religion and ethnicity was merged. All those of Middle Eastern ethnicity, or Islamic practice (collectively referred to as “Muslims”), were negatively isolated and integrated into the world of broadcasting. It took mere minutes for reports of the catastrophe to be broadcasted globally and mere days Muslims across the United States to become the central target of discrimination. The imagery, videos and language used to represent innocent civilians of the Middle East have been successful in generating a common sense of fear and uncertainty, in regards to what the future holds, across the country. Corporations such as the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Cable News Network (CNN) devotedly b...
Thirty years ago, if I told you that the primary means of communicating and disseminating information would be a series of interconnected computer networks you would of thought I was watching Star Trek or reading a science fiction novel. In 2010, the future of mass media is upon us today; the Internet. The Internet is and will only grow in the future as the primary means of delivering news, information and entertainment to the vast majority of Americans. Mass media as we know it today will take new shape and form in the next few years with the convergence and migration of three legacy mediums (Television, Radio, Newspaper) into one that is based on the Internet and will replace these mediums forever changing the face of journalism, media and politics. In this paper I will attempt to explain the transition of print media to one of the internet, how the shift to an internet based media environment will impact journalism and mass media, and how this migration will benefit society and forever change the dynamic of news and politics.
The Mass Media is a unique feature of modern society; its development has accompanied an increase in the magnitude and complexity of societal actions and engagements, rapid social change, technological innovation, rising personal income and standard of living and the decline of some traditional forms of control and authority.
The Role of Media in the Society Media has always played a huge role in our society. For a long time media is one of the methods of controlling people and leisure. In In ancient times when there was no newspapers and television, people used literature as a source of information, some books like "the Iliad", and different stories about great kings, shows those people the information about them, and how they are used. Nowadays, media is one of the main parts of our lives and our society, because we use word media, to combine all. sources of information to be used.
Everyone watches the news but does that mean we have to trust them? The media is known for giving us verified information that is usually observed and /or proven. Most people get their information about current events from the news media because it would be impossible to gather all the news themselves. Television news is extremely important in the United States because more people get their news from television broadcasts than from any other source. Print media is the oldest form of media but is very significant. It is known for just reporting more than any other source of media. Radio news was the best ways to broadcast news before the television but, people still listen to the radio every day. “If errors regularly occur in a publication, its reputation suffers in threaten the very existence of publication,” said journalist Maximilian Schafer. Nobody wants to read false publication when they deserve the truth. There are several types of media but false news would still get out to the society by one of these Medias. There have situations where the news told the public false information and got away with it.
World has become a “global village” due to social media. Communication gap has been removed from excessive using of social media.
The impact of the internet on journalism is one area that continues to attract the attention of media scholars. The technology has brought forth a set of opportunities and challenges for conventional media (Garrison, 1996). The last ten years have seen a lot of inventions which have greatly altered the way people access and consume news. Audiences have also “developed more sophisticated and specific demands and tastes for news delivery, thanks in part to the explosion of social media and mobile technology.” (Kolodzy 2013)
