The Importance Of My Writing

Writing has been my favorite pastime since my sophomore year of high school. I thoroughly enjoy spending some of my weekends just writing short stories or poems in my own personal notebook. When I write, I feel free. I can express my opinions and beliefs without worrying about being judged. I feel as if I’m in a different world. Although I enjoy writing, I am most likely not the strongest writer among my peers. I tend to get caught up in my emotions, I go off topic, and grammar takes a back seat. I know I need help with my writing skills, but I honestly just enjoy being able to express myself through written words. Although I love writing now, I didn’t always cheer when a teacher gave me a writing prompt. I owe my writing enjoyment to key personal experiences. Prior to my sophomore year of high school, I cringed when a teacher handed me a writing prompt. I would basically wad the prompt up and toss it in my bag. I absolutely despised writing. I spent the majority of that summer transforming my opinions and feelings into stories or poems. As I wrote, I began to see my own strengths and even weaknesses. My writings are usually very emotional and I incorporate my opinions into the pieces somehow. Sometimes that can be a weakness when writing a serious and factual paper. Other times it’s a strength because people can relate to me through my writings. Another strength or weakness is my vivid details. There are multiple pieces of writing where my vivid details are very powerful and improve the paper. However, some of my pieces are overflowing with details and they weaken the content. I don’t have a filter either, so many details are too emotional. There are just certain skills that are an advantage and a disadvantage for me. I am so hopeful that one day my skills will progress and only improve my writings, not weaken
