Strength development and emotional intelligence are an important part of the professional persona. The knowledge and development of my own personal strengths will have a profound impact on my professional growth. According to Rath (2007), if I focus on my strengths, it will impact my confidence and as a result I will be happier and more productive (p. 12). Following this advice means I have to identify and develop my strengths and market them. Every nursing unit is composed of individuals with many different strengths. 13). The brainstorming process to come up with my strengths was not simple. I found myself looking through the internet to find strengths that other people had and comparing those to myself, as well as asking those who know me best for their opinion. Only two of the five strengths I chose aligned with the StrengthsFinder themes. The quick learner strength seems to fit with the Learner theme from StrengthsFinder and the goal-oriented strength I chose seems to fit in with the Responsibility theme. I believe that strengths can be ambiguous. There is no universal language when it comes to verbalizing strengths and some things that I perceive as a strength may be insignificant to the task I am performing or the professional role I play. Furthermore, the only times I tend to reflect on my strengths is when applying for a new job. Reflecting on strengths should become a regular habit. More frequent reflection on strengths keeps us aware of the need for continued strength development and reminds us of the contributions we bring to the environment in which we work.
