Motivation or, the lack of it is a major problem for most teachers of English as a Second Language (ESL) or as a Foreign Language. It is common knowledge that for second language learning to occur, a certain degree of motivation should be in place. Otherwise, all efforts to teach students to speak, write, and read simply go down the drain. William Littlewood explains that “motivation is the force that involves student into learning process, and determines whether a learner embarks on a task, how much energy he devotes to it, and how long he perseveres.” Nevertheless, students in EFL classroom unfortunately are very often there because they have to be, not because they want to be.
In many language schools the learning material has to be accomplished within the frames of curriculum and progress plan. That complicates teacher’s work and leaves students frustrated and bored. Although they perform oral presentations, listen to taped passages, and practice language skills, task-based activities in the textbooks do not represent real life or elicit authentic communication. In other words, ...
Although today’s culture is for students to sit, listen, and learn, Edmundson and Freire indicate that there are valuable rewards in provoking students to critically think and analyze the material provided, but say little about ways to keep students motivated. Further research indicates that motivation plays a significant part in keeping the interest and focus of students and teachers. Adjustments to educational culture are insignificant if strategies for increased motivation in the classrooms aren’t utilized.

Teaching and learning a second or foreign language is much like teaching in the general education classroom. ESL classrooms need structure, nurturing, and sufficient instructional strategies. With such diversity among adolescent ELs, it is important for teachers to learn as much as possible about their students’ background, prior knowledge, and experiences, and to have knowledge of strategies that directly address the needs of their students. Instructors need to build relationships of trust with their students and their families. Also, teachers need to establish predictable classroom routines and procedures. Students can put their focus on content and activities when they know what to expect and are familiar with classroom routines. Teachers model routines and procedures by creating opening and ending procedures, procedures for distributing materials, positing agendas and schedules. It is important to keep in mind that ELs bring creative, capable minds which can process higher-order thinking and learning although those minds need strategic support, explicit instruction, and positive reinforcement to further promote learning.
The purpose of this assignment is to explain the impact of English language learners in the classroom. As a foreign student, English language learner in the United States faces multiple challenges for achieving academic success. To successfully complete a task, they need to master both English as a language and how it is used in core content classes especially when they are an adult. When trying to assist in instructing English language learners, they usually have many concepts and language abilities that they need to master, as do the teachers that are trying to teach them. With the incorporation of the concepts and approaches to identify and assess the issues and concerns that we have learned in our classroom instruction, such as lesson preparation,
These days, there is an ongoing debate among people about the importance of motivation. With many people claiming that motivation and structure practice can consider as the most effective method rather than teaching in classrooms. While many other arguably arrogating that classroom coaching should not replace with any other alternate methods. However, this notion merits serious consideration. In this essay, I will explicate my point of view by analyzing both the sides of the assertion.
The Little Oxford English Dictionary (2006), defines motivation as “the reason for your actions or behaviour”. Similarly, motivation is defined as “the reasons underlying behavior” (Guay et al., 2010, p. 712). In Gredler, Broussard and Garrison (2004), motivation is “the attribute that moves us to do or not to do something” (p. 106). This means that motivation is perceived as the drive to accomplish tasks or the very reason the tasks are not being done properly. It is basically what makes a person put or choose not to put in their effort when completing work. Motivation is the combination of what a person believes in, what he or she values, how a person perceives a certain given situation, what a person likes or dislikes
‘Motivation’ the term is derived from the Latin word ’emover’ which implies ‘to move’. It is the act of stimulating someone or oneself to get a desired course of action and provides answer to certain basic questions such as: Why and how people work and what determines the direction of their actions? Motivation and Inspiration often go hand in hand. One can be either internally motivated towards achieving a particular goal or need an inspiration for the same. However it’s the underlying needs that determine one’s actions and thus goals. The basic problem is to identify what makes people to move or act; what drives, motivates them. The motivation to fulfill Self-Actualization goals come only after the physiological needs are satisfied. Therefore
Currently, in the state of Georgia, the TKES system used to observe teachers reflect instruction in departmentalized and self-contained classrooms. As a result, schools are transitioning to more departmentalized classroom settings due to increasing enrollment of students, higher demand in differentiation, and easier transitions to upper grade levels. This study will help determine the importance of departmentalized versus self-contained classroom settings. A study by, Dr. Alecia Sthrol showed statistics that teachers in middle school and high school have seen a drastic change in student achievement due to departmentalized classroom settings. However, there were a lot of cons that came along with the process that if not kept to par, would result to a decrease in student achievement. The purpose, of this research is to determine if departmentalized classroom settings or self-contained classroom settings affect student motivation and achievement for fourth grade students. (insert motivation statements here)“According to the self-worth theory of achievement motivation, a sense of academic self-worth is the most critical factor in determining student attitudes and behavior. The key to academic self-worth is students’ perceptions of their own ability in school, especially in comparison with others. Students learn to avoid shame and humiliation due to failure by choosing to not try. This type of, intentional resistant classroom behavior have been coined “negative motivation” (Teel, 2001 p. 16).
“Motivation is a complex part of human psychology and behavior that influences how individuals choose to invest their time, how much energy they exert in any given task, how they think and feel about the task, and how long they persist at the task” (Urdan & Schoenfelder, 2006). The biggest question educators face in today’s classroom is what motivates a student to do something and why? Virtually all students are motivated in one way or another. Research of student motivation suggests a theory that emphasizes a social-cognitive perspective. The cognition of students regarding academic work are influenced by social factors, such as messages from the teacher about the difficulty of the task, the perceived abilities of classmates, and the information about the importance of learning the material (Urdan & Schoenfelder, 2006). In this paper the focus will primarily be on those elements within the classroom that influence student motivation and engagement.

Classrooms are filled with students of different learning levels, developmental rates, and various amounts of self-esteem and determination. Educators have the daily challenge of finding new teaching strategies, as well as stimulating and maintaining student motivation, and minimizing anxiety in the classroom. Educational theorists believe that motivation is a large factor of and has a strong impact on academic achievement. Classroom environment, specific teaching strategies and encouraging autonomy may be considered in order for teachers to promote motivation in the classroom. In addition to motivation, decreasing anxiety can also lead to positive learning outcomes. Teachers can incorporate clear guidelines, goals, and support to lower anxiety. Practicing anxiety management strategies may also be a lifelong skill teachers can offer students. High motivation and anxiety management strategies can result in academic achievement in the classroom, and personal success outside the classroom, as well.
Motivation, in my own words, is being excited about participating in something. I think motivation is one of the most important things in my life and it is definitely something I think about every day. When I am motivated to do something, I become obsessed with getting it done. Motivation is something that influences my choices every day. I am always thinking of things I can do to better myself and keep me motivated. I think motivation is an amazing thing to have as a high school student, especially since I am a senior. What is the role of the teacher, and what steps will you take to ensure that you are fulfilling this role?
Motivation is really important tool in a learning environment. Also motivation effects student learning and their behavior as well. It directs behavior towards particular targets. Also it effect the decision which students takes. In motivation mainly we have two types which is intrinsically and extrinsically being motivated. For example: when a student is intrinsically motivated they just do it for themselves not because of the reward that they will get back. It’s just because they have their own interest and they enjoy doing that. On the other side, when a student is extrinsically motivated they just do it for the reward that they will get. That’s why in learning process it’s important that each student should
