Mental Health is the well-being of an individual due to their emotional, psychological, and social status. An individual’s mental health can be affected by many factors, such as, brain chemistry, personal experiences, and family history (HHS). One in every five adults are affected by a mental health illness or disorder (NCBI). Mental health is important because it affects how an individual interacts in school, work, and society and how they address their physical health (APA). Mental health issues not only affect the individual, but the people around them as well. Suicide is the second leading cause of death caused by mental health problems in ages 15 to 29 year olds (WHO). Depression is one of the top factors that can increase the risk of suicide in many people (UCSC). Depression, is a mental disorder that is usually caused by biological factors. This problem is a global problem, where it affects 300 million people of all ages in the world that has caused disabilities (WHO). But, women are more affected by Depression than men (WHO). And about 62.9% of adults received mental health services, but what happened to the rest of the people that go undiagnosed? Those people tend to develop a chronic medical condition (NAMI). Depression affects people differently because we all react differently to daily obstacles. However, the White adult group has a higher number of people that are affected by depression. Depression can not be tracked down to only one thing as its cause. Although, a few factors that may lead to depression may be, social, psychological, and biological components such as a chemical imbalance of the brain. World Health Organization (WHO) has a program called Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) where they have tried to increase services by providing trained health providers to assist those in need. The goal is to create more policies and programs that can be implemented or enforced in primary, middle, and high schools to educate students and their families the importance of mental health and ways to learn healthy mental health habits to prevent future mental problems as adult that can later on lead to suicide. If these new policies and programs are successful the ideas can be taken to other parts of the world to help people who need mental help. As public health professionals the goal is to make sure that everyone has access to health care and try to prevent illnesses, so that everyone can be as healthy as they can be.
