The Importance Of Love In Raymond Carver's Short Story

Ever since we were little the ideal fairytale for women and men was imbedded in our head as little girls and boys. We were going to grow up, find our prince charming or princess, and live happily ever after. We would live in huge mansions, drive the best cars, and have butlers and maids serves us. That’s what Disney movies taught us, from the stories of Cinderella to Beauty in the Beast. It showed us that there would be some hardships, but in the end that would be our lives. As little boys and girls we did believe that and that no doubt this is how life would be until we grew up and find out that wasn’t the case.
Raymond Carver shows us that this fairy tale scenario isn’t the case when it comes to real life. In his short stories such as “Jerry and Molly and Sam” and “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.” He tells us that love is not as easy as we thought to achieve like those fairy tale movies. I guess that is why they are called fairy tales. In the story “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” four people sat at a table trying to explain what they think love is to them. Mel seems to have an idea what love means to him, but he cannot achieve that himself. He explains how an elderly couple has the kind of love he wants, but he is not capable of having that love. They reunited and realize they were still in love with each and they had made a huge mistake being with other people. They later got married and had a daughter to complete their family.
