Some people are unaware of what literature really means. Literature is referring to something that deals with a body of written works; within poems, plays and novels. Literature is used to explore human experiences in all possibilities. It is something that deals with our most apprehensiveness such as death, family, religion, good and evil, character, courage, and more. “While the information is represented in abstract form and generalized: facts, statistics, and data” (Gillespie, 20). It offers a different type of learning than just collecting information by, requiring us to experience things and participate. “We’re drawing a cathedral. Me and him are working on it” (Carver, 115). Before they started drawing this, Bub can see but Robert cannot. When Bub attempts the description of the cathedral he realizes that he could not find the words to do so. When they finally start drawing it he comes to a conclusion that he pulls himself in and adds more details to the drawing. When he had told Bub to close his eyes, Bub really did not understand why he was telling him to do so but he did it anyways and they kept drawing and even though “the blind man” said to open and look he still kept them shut and said “It’s really something” (Carver, 115). When the drawing is complete he has a placeless feeling about it and feels like he has reached an epiphany. The drawing has changed Robert’s life and lets him see beyond what is immediately visible within a physical sense. The “Cathedral” is more towards the cynicism side also because the narrator is focusing on the cynicism towards the blind man and the way his wife seems to look up to him.
