Moving on, some teachers feel that literature component should be tested in main examination. They suggest that 20% be allocated for literature section. For example, Paper 1 – 40%, Paper 2- 40% and Contemporary Literature – 20% (Cheng, 2007). This would bring a total of 100% rather than not assessing literature in examination at all.
Lazar (2005) claimed that literature is an inspiring material, a ground that encourages language acquisition and consciousness, an entree into other cultures and an avenue for the development of critical, aesthetic and artistic thinking. Literature can eventually develop an all-inclusive individual. According to a survey done at various secondary schools at Johor Bahru to determine teachers and students perceptions towards literature component, generally most of teachers and students agree with the incorporation of literature in English. They believe that literature has a crucial role to play in stirring student’s interest in learning English and develop language proficiency and expand vocabulary.
Literature has been perceived to be the driving force that may cultivate students’ reading habit and develop personal response. However this sometimes does not apply in actual classroom setting. This is because, 93.3 % of the teachers found to emphasize more on preparing students for examination purposes than creating opportunities for students to cultivate reading habits for meaningful purpose. (Ismail, et al., 2008).

Next, cultural enrichment through literary texts can be injecting through facilitating students on the understanding of how communication takes places in that particular country. Having literary texts with pictures and colourful locale, readers discover thoughts, customs and traditions in which characters from various social and regional backgrounds can be described. Also, literature enlarges a great deal to the cultural grammar of the learners.
