Writing is an important and useful way to communicate with people. Without an essential writing skill, people may have difficulty communicating with others. In Pace University, English Department focuses on improving students writing by adding a workshop class to improve students ' writing. Over the course of the semester, I have learned a better technique and tips from Professor Boylan, reading an essay from authors and class discussion. Writing had always been one of my weaknesses, but it was challenging to take that initial step past high school.
Also, I have trouble with when I use a quote from a book how to introduce it and explain why I chose it. I hope to overcome these obstacles next semester. However, I feel my strengths were collecting information after I understood what I was reading and also adding evidence in my papers. Once I took notes on my reading and then read over my notes a couple times it was easier for me to lay out an outline and come up with ideas to talk about. The evidence I would always choose would be quotes from the books, which I feel I picked the right ones to use.
My ultimate goal in writing and reading is to get advance and go beyond my expertise. I only wanted to obtain new knowledge in writing and reading, but the first year learning goals helped me understand what I need to work on to achieve my ultimate goal. I have learned to read variety of texts and write different styles of writing in English. The work I have done in each semester has fulfilled almost all of the first year learning goals. Learning new ways of writing and reading is very significant because it helps us become a better writer and reader.
I used listing while writing my classify and divide essay and I believe it helped me to stay on topic and keep my writing organized. I used an outline to help me write my compare and contrast essay, and while it did help with organization, it was more complicated than the listing technique. Before this class, I understood purpose was important; however, during this class I have discovered that putting more focus on purpose can result in a more interesting thesis and paper. I have learned to think about purpose before writing my essay, once I have narrowed my topic I ask myself why would anyone want to read my essay. Consideri... ... middle of paper ... ...e in my daily writings such as, e-mails, letters, notes and discussion board responses to practice what I have learned.
As a strong math, science and engineering student, writing has not come easy to me and by taking this class, I was hoping to become a stronger writer. Throughout the semester, organizing ideas in logical ways has become straight forward thanks to the peer discussions and review I have had. Before this class, I struggled to transition between ideas and discuss each idea in a logical sequence and, unfortunately, my language arts and history grades suffered as a result. By exuding effort and receiving guidance, my hope was to improve my writing and prepare myself for the college writing which would be
Also through practice this semester I was better able to write a concrete thesis statement, something I was puzzled with in my previous English courses. Now I am more confident in my writing, but I still believe that there are certain areas in my writing that could use some improvement. During this semester I have been able to look at my previous essay and see the progress that I have made. With my prologue essay there are countless grammar and spelling mistakes. I take this into account now because I have learned to reread my essays before deciding whether or not they are finalized.
It has helped me make a good start and saved me time. One thing I find difficult with this essay is develop a good thesis since I kept on changing it because I kept adding more topics for my idea which means I had to revise the outline too. Although I was a bit struggling with the thesis, the in-class assignments had also helped me add some information that can be added to my main idea such as the quiz about the literary analysis in the story for “A Temporary Matter” and the group discussions about the same story. Moreover, one of my weaknesses in this piece is the sentence structure which means I need to pay attention to the language, punctuation in order to develop a strong and consistent narrative. One thing that I would like to improve on this piece is MLA citation since I tend to sometimes forget to use proper MLA in text citation.
English 1010 was exactly the class I needed to improve myself as an assertive reader and writer. This semester, I have learnt not only about genre and genre selection, but also using concise language, sources, improving drafting skills and overcoming writers block. In How to Write Anything, the various genres and sub genres were displayed. This has helped to me to identify the genre of any paper based on the type paper I’m completing. For Example, I know that if I’m completing a product review, the genre of that paper is Evaluation.
Other than that, I learned how to write an essay to persuade the reader. Lastly, for Principles of Writing, I constructed an argumentative essay about corporal punishment. This essay probably took me the longest to do, since we had to write and research the topic. I included my argumentative essay because it gave me a better understanding of how to research a broad topic with credible outside sources. The hardest thing for me during this was to find credible sources, since in high school I was only told not to use Wikipedia.
Thinking of logical locations to place these phrases can help the logic and focus of my essays and help me gain more points. Composition and Rhetoric 111 has given me the ability to grow as a writer. The class has challenged me in not only my writing ability, but also my mental stamina and ability to adapt writing to constraints given by the teacher. After taking this class I know I need to work on placing phrases in appropriate locations, limiting to-be verbs, and creating effective topic sentences. This class has allowed me to understand what makes me a good writer, but also a bad writer.
