The Importance Of Leadership In An Organization

Several years ago I worked for an organization that was new to the industry in which it conducted business. The management within the organization was unorganized and lacked effective leadership. Through the course of my employment there were many negative things management did which, consequently, cause many of the employees to have ill will. Although the leadership may have tried has hard as it could to have an effective staff, in many ways it failed to motivate, communicate and please the employees. I will explain the behavior of leadership for this company, explain how it became negative and give some recommendations on how the company’s leadership could have handled things differently.

Communication within an organization is very important. The company had many problems with communication and it started with the leader of the organization. The company utilized top down communication, wherein the owner of the company disseminated information to his management staff, and the management staff, in turn, disseminated the information to the employees. I can recall that having meetings on a weekly basis in order to provide the employees with information regarding changes to tasks and procedures. The job design for all employees, including managers was task oriented. The communications came in the form of directives and it was accepted that the information we were given was limited and required the employees to access the company intranet to receive clarification of new procedures. “Even when people have ready access to the internet or a firm’s intranet, people are more likely to turn to other people for information than to impersonal sources” (de Vries, Bakker-Pieper & Oostenveld, 2009).
