1. Introduction
Knowledge management and innovation are interconnected. Good knowledge must be codified, combined and shared in order to achieve innovation. “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower”, a quote made by Steve Job. Indeed, successful and unique innovation allows organization to stay ahead of competition, and allow them to be the market leader to shape the future of the industry. However, organization that fail to innovate will lose ground to competitors and can only be a follower in the industry trend. Usually, people within the same department have the same specialist, hence, they tend to have the same way of thinking and solutions. Also, when innovation is kept within an isolated group, they will no longer listen to employees from other departments, neglecting that the knowledge within other departments can be critical in successful innovation as well. It is said that innovative team do not need people who will “fit in”, but individual who will challenge the team in a constructive way. Innovation has rapidly assumed a position of prominence in world competition on a global scale. To compete in this environment, organizations need a level of innovation. As competition becomes more global and time-based, organizations must develop and deliver new and superior products or services in less time. The challenge for modern organizations is to revitalize them so they can successfully and continuously develop newer products and enhance business development.
Innovation has become a must in many businesses considering the current economic climate and the variety of needs of customers. With stagnating economic climate and the amount of competition in each market businesses have been in hard ground. The growing competition for businesses has made it much harder to for businesses to have a good margin for their profits.
Innovation, what is innovation? Innovation is the creation and implementation of new ideas, methods, or strategies that facilitate a process, add value, or improve quality (Tidd & Bessant, 2013). In fact, innovation is the reason for all the new amenities of today’s 21st century. Moreover, innovation has brought forth new perspectives and ideas that have inspired numerous of businesses to expand and improve their daily operations, increase productivity, resolve dilemmas, and attain a level of success. However, such success cannot be attained without properly examining, planning, embracing, and managing innovation. In other words, organizations must carefully map the process of innovation in order to succeed.
Employees are companies’ wealth of ideas when it comes to innovation. Several companies have recognized the importance of including innovation within their business model. In fact Google allows employees to spend about 20% of their time to create, design and innovate. Hoarty, Gurram & Laurence, E. (2013) recognize that employees play an integral role in innovation. This is because innovation goes beyond new product or service creation; it is the ‘generation, acceptance and implementation of new ideas, processes, products or services Hoarty, Gurram & Laurence, E. (2013).’ Therefore, companies must strive to introduce innovation as part of their culture.

It takes those who have innovation in their hearts to drive them towards this goal. It is important that staff on the units take time to assess innovators and brain storm areas in which they can empower and motivate the others to follow. The culture and environment of units must be that of being willing to be open to change and new ideas so they can be assessed during initial meetings.

In addition to urgency, Gustavsson could not create a powerful guiding coalition. He established a cross-functional team to develop a new moisture-resistant product. But the team did not include a sales manager who knows customers' needs and eventually sells the product. Although the team developed a commercially-viable product, their efforts, at least in the short term, were unsatisfactory, because with sales people's own doubts about the new product, they were afraid of jeopardizing the reputation of current product. Moreover, these cross functional teams operated within the established organization maintained the company's dominate culture and past norms. We know that structurally independent teams that are tightly integrated into the existing hierarchy with different cultures and processes are often more successful.
This benefits any company because innovation implementation requires the linking of individuals learning process to the innovation strategy needed to establish. It is necessary for companies to spread their demystification of innovation through their organizational cultural diversity. With the understanding of individual’s roles in multiple innovation implementations, the company should be able to balance the creativity that creates new ideas with discipline that recognizes the company’s mission for market

Over the course of this class I have learned how important it is to be creative and innovative in the way that businesses are conducted within the organizations. The ability to innovate is the “secret sauce” of business success (Dyer, et al., 2009). However, creativity and innovation cannot take place if the leaders are not willing to foster a culture of innovation within the organization. Amabile & Khaire (2008) asserted that, it is essential to motivate people to contribute ideas by making it safe to fail. Stress that the goal is to experiment constantly, fail early and often—and learn as much as possible in the process. Convince people that they won’t be punished or humiliated if they speak up or make mistakes (Amabile & Khaire, 2008).
