All the elements are in place for you to nail your interview. You did all the research on the company, practiced your elevator pitch, dry-cleaned your best suit and printed out a fresh copy of your polished resume including references. However, while you are being interviewed, you begin to struggle with some of the questions. You shared too much, too little or personal information or maybe you did not dress appropriately. You are certain that you have blown any chance of getting the job. Before you start erasing this bad interviewing experience from your mind, there may be a possibility for you to recoup your chances of getting the job. However, bad-mouthing a prior employer during an interview is not the place to share your complaints. The purpose of the interview is to set yourself apart from the other candidates. Unfortunately, bad mouthing a former employer will create red flags to a prospective employer making them wonder if you are the best fit for the role or are the cause of the negativity. If you must explain a negative situation such as a layoff or getting fired, it is best to prepare a neutral statement ahead of time so that you are not caught by surprise.
