Humans are lifelong learners. “Holistic approaches to teaching and learning recognize the connectedness of mind, body and spirit…” (Deewr, 2009). The various learning styles and the needs of evolving human beings’ responsiveness impact on the holistic education. Holistic education’s principle is to prepare children to meet the challenges of living and learning. It involves the children learning to be humans and growing up. Such an education firmly believes that young people should learn about healthy relationships, pro-social behaviour, emotional and social development.

The schools work on emotional development “needs to be coordinated, coherent, planned, and developmental” (Elias et al, 1997). All elements of the school experience should strengthen one another in order to pass on reliable messages to learners. The school experience would include a discipline plan, managing the classroom environment efficiently, teaching social skills explicitly, managing anti-social behaviour and involving parents and the community. Educational interventions with learners with all kinds of emotional problems have constantly emphasised the importance of involving families (Kamps and Tankersley, …show more content…
A role model allows learning to take place through their loyalty to excellence and through their skill to make learners realise their own personal development. The most dominant and life-changing role models are teachers.
By taking into consideration the affective domain when planning courses, delivering lectures and activities and when assessing student learning, teachers’ effectiveness are increased. Student motivation, perceptions, values and attitudes are factors of the affective domain. During each fundamental stage of development, students are followed by teachers. Teachers are poised to become influential in student’s life because they are with the students for five days a week.
The syllabus does not give details of what the students learn from their teachers such as, allowing learners to grow in a responsible way and helping them to become independent. Teachers are always watched and viewed as motivators, guides, heroes, surrogate parents, mentors, and leaders who thrive to make the world a better place. . School allows social learning as well as academic learning to take place. Despite the fact that a teacher’s authority on the social sphere of school reduces as students mature, those early messages still have a result on how they will relate with others in the future. They deeply impact our student's personal growth as they continually see and
Holistic education – education of head (cognitive knowledge), heart (emotional and spiritual learning), and hands (practical and physical skills);
Preparing students for life success, requires a balanced education that includes social and emotional education. It is important that families, schools and communities come together to achieve this. This article is researching the positive effects, of social and emotional learning of students in kindergarten to eighth grade. This article summarizes three reviews of research on the impact of social and emotional learning (SEL) programs on elementary school and middle age school students. These programs promote social and emotional skills (Weissberg, Taylor, Schellinger, Payton, Pachan, Dymcicki and Durlak, 2008). The SEL programs showed many benefits in both school and after-school settings for students with and without behavioral and emotional problems (Weissberg, Payton, Pachan, Dymicki and Durlak, 2008). They were also effective for racially and ethnically diverse students from urban, rural and suburban settings (Weissberg, Taylor, Schellinger, Payton, Pachan, Dymicki and Durlak, 2008) The SEL programs improved students’ social-emotional skills, attitudes about self, others, positive social behavior and connection to school. They also reduced students’ conduct problems and emotional stress (Weissberg, Taylor, Schellinger, Payton, Pachan, Dymicki and Durlak, 2008).
A holistic approaches to teaching and learning children should pay attention to children’s physical, personal, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing as practitioners should also focus on the child’s cognitive development.
Any school curriculum should aim at enabling children to be able to think in broader terms, motivate them to want to be more knowledgeable and above all, allow them to come up with new approaches to problem solving. However, more too often teachers tend to limit the students to only the known facts in text books, something which prompts them to remain in their comfort zones. Additionally, the purpose of any formal education is not only to gain formal knowledge but also to gain social knowledge. Different teachers will have different approaches to achieve this. Despite the approach used, in the end of the day, they are expected to have involved and impacted positively on the different characters of children in their classrooms that is, the shy,

As children are growing they spend more time in school therefore an appropriate and enjoyable environment is necessary. When faced with classroom management and behaviors teachers should encourage and help children when needed. There are numerous techniques and skill to help teachers manage challenging behaviors. A good role model sets the path for others to follow, by being outstanding in all they do. Naturally, people learn by observing, more than by listening. This enables people learn what they can observe easily as compared to what they hear. When a leader becomes a role model, there is a likelihood they will comprehend better what the people being led go through, hence the leader will impose practical expectations on the followers (Charles 9).
A role model means to me someone who is confident in themselves but can own up to their mistakes. They have life experience and skills but continue to learn. A role model should want to guide other people away from their mistakes yet comfort them in their downfalls.
Teachers help us expand and open our mind by giving us skills throughout students’ early life to help students when they are older. By learning information from teachers, students become better people, in a couple of ways. Besides inquiring knowledge from their teachers, students learn to work with one another, open their mind to other peoples’ thoughts and ideas, respect one another, and learn different techniques for life’s issues.
School is an environment where children are intended to learn many interpersonal skills. Through emotional learning they develop self awareness, more specifically identifying and recognising emotions, strengths, needs and values, self-efficacy and spirituality. Role models can make a huge difference in a child's life. My Physical Education teacher had a major impact of effecting of what I want to be now. Aleta Jo Crotty helped me to learn to take responsibility for my actions, and in my choices I am in control. By using guidelines that was set by her for my life, I hope to reach just one child.
Many people find someone in his/her life to look up to, a role model. There are many different kinds of role models; they can be singers, public speakers, a parent, or even a friend. Role models also are not determined by certain criteria. A role model can be a role model just because they are a leader or have a great talent. Oprah Winfrey is considered a role model to many individuals because of her tough childhood, wonderful charity work, her schools, and the true relationships with her fans. Oprah stands out among many people on her ability to feel others’ pain and help those people get through their troubling times.
The teacher in the classroom encompasses several roles. Resource, facilitator, and mentor are three of them. The teacher must be a resource that provides ideas and lessons to be learned. The teacher also must be a facilitator that encourages creative thinking, exploration, and mastery. The teachers is responsible for what needs to be learned. The subject matter that is taught is based on both curriculum as well as the world that students live i...
Teachers serve as the guiding force in a student’s life. They are responsible for molding a student’s personality and shaping his/her mental orientation. Teachers deeply impact our lives and direct the course of our future. One cannot deny the influence of teachers in one’s life. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration to say that, till a certain age, out life revolves around our teachers. They are our constant companions, until we grow old enough to come out of their shadow and move ahead on our own.
To become an affective teacher, I would began managing my class from the beginning of the school year by providing rules to the class that they must follow. When I give rules, students tend follow them every day, and count them as a usual duties they must do every day in my classroom. Rules build buildings build a city, a community, a country, therefore rules can build my class the way I want it to be built and raised. There will be punishments and there will be awarding to those who listen and to those who don’t, everything is managed. But, I see management differ from grade level to another, because, for example, the punishment for a kindergartner will differ from the punishment to an eighth grader. Also the class rules will differ as well from a low grade level to a higher grade level. The rules will be less strict and less worry for low grade level students, because they are little kids still they don’t understand very quickly. Therefore, low grade level teachers, I believe must have more patience than the high level grade teachers. The second most effective step to take in a classroom after making sure the class is managed carefully, is to become with great instructional methods. Some excellent instructional methods are the great and effective teacher lectures that are mostly used in the classroom, group and class discussions where each student expresses his or her thoughts and ideas, and some types of home or classwork like textbook assignments and reading assignments in
